I had some bottles planned for a final tasting with the Sergy gang. The plan was to reintroduce a couple of wines they didn’t like in prior tastings !
The plan:
The actuals:
And an extra (in mag, another extra showed up, keep reading):
This was a good lunch. All double blind.
First up, A. Bergère Petit Meslier
Disclaimer: we sell this.
Forgot to take a picture of the back label but 0g/l and disgorgement around summer 2022.
Obviously no one got 100% Petit Meslier. Who would? Wonderful freshness. Deep golden color. Lots of depth on fruit flavors: mango, pear, passion fruit and red apple. Broad spectrum. But a nice tension stays on. Salininity on the finish. I could see this with a lot of fatty white fish or poultry dishes in cream sauce. Well made. Guesses were BdB or no dosage Meunier.
Disclaimer: we sell this.
Guffens-Heynen Mâcon-Pierreclos 1er Jus de Chavigne 2017
It doesn’t have the depth of the 2017 Pouilly-Fuissé C.C but that is not taking anything away from this wine. Ripe pear, some citrus, touch of butter and cream on the nose. The palate is nicely dense with chewiness and a nice green almonds cut on the finish. Lovely. Guesses were Joseph Colin Puligny-Montrachet (there was some reduction, sesame at first), Meursault Perrières and eventually Mâconnais.
Château de Meursault Pinot Beurot 2020
I blinded the guy who introduced me to this wine and… he didn’t get it . Everyone was in Burgundy but all around Chardonnay. White florals, ripe pear and a touch of cream. Lovely wine and this could go through a long slumber and still improve! Not an oddity, a proper wine.
Wasenhaus Spätburgunder 2021
I still have some 2021 of this, the Vulkan and the Bellen. I initially did a tasting of this in 2023 and no one liked them (thin, weedy, green, bad). Well… what would you know! Everyone loved the nose and Pinot Noir was everyone’s first guess. Red florals, cherry, some raspberry and dried herbs. Lovely. The palate is lively with some greeny savouriness but the fruit is now sufficient to balance it all out. Good bottle. Good wine.
Bel-Air Marquis d’Aligre 2010
The sole remainder of my last BAMA tasting. A friend who was there for the BAMA road crash was also present. He never guessed this was the same wine. Not my best BAMA 2010 as it still felt a little on edge (not sure it could age more) but still, lots of joy in drinking this. Nose full of strawberries, damp earth, leather and dried herbs. Full on red berries and bright acidity on the palate with a good finish on earthy tones and tobacco. Everyone loved this. Guesses were Lussac with some age or 2017 Pessac-Léognan. Cool reveal.
Domaine Pierre Amiot et Fils Morey-St-Denis 1er Cru Les Ruchots 2017
Côte de Nuits goodness. Ripe red berries, slight earthiness, a little herbal stem and expressive floral tones. Plenty of red berries with medium+ acidity that drives a mineral finish. Powdery but assertive tanins. All good. Guesses were Gevrey 2019 early on and then everybody just started drinkng it . Good bottle.
Mullineux Syrah 2018
Another offender that the gang didn’t like 2 years ago. This time, spot on. Guesses were Northern Rhône from a sunny year and some ventured further south. Red and Blue berries, bramble all day long and some dry earth on the finish. Good acidity bringing the ripe fruit home. Even though this was ripe, there was a cool mineral twang to it. Good
Left overs from the awful BAMA tasting.
Gabin et Felix Richoux Irancy Veaupessiot 2018
Opened on Friday but kept in the wine fridge. My buddy who was there on Friday didn’t recognize this. It still doesn’t feel like Burgundy but it really gained posture: ripe red berries, some oak spiciness and lively acidity. Guesses were Southern Rhône or something “not French” . Definitely ripe but good acidity and almost Givry like profile (not quite as mineral). Enjoyable.
Château Sociando-Mallet 2014
Same treatment, 3 days in the wine fridge since the last tasting. I’m not a “3 day” wine guy. I’m not an anything 12 hours later+ wine guy but this really found its rhythm. Slight bricking, perfect mature Bordeaux nose with red and black berries, leather, earth and slight bell pepper. This was singing.
We ordered chocolate ice cream (it was 40oC in Sergy today) and my buddy disappeared to grab this from his wine shop.
1969 Mas Amiel Maury
Dang! I normally suck at blinds but I know my buddy likes Maury.
The picture doesn’t do it justice, I knew this was old (brownish). Vin muté on the nose but all clean, no oxidative notes, nutty but no rancio, prunes, dates and torrefaction. Just freaking wonderful. I ventured Maury 70 and this will remain one of my great blind calls .
We needed something to reset the tastebuds and in this area there is no @Jeremy_Holmes cleansing ales. It’s normally Chartreuse but we didn’t have any handy. Champagne it is. From Magnum:
Haton Blanc de Blancs
Didn’t check the back label. Decent. Citrus and chalk but rather generic. Ok.
And just when I thought I could chillax, friends showed for l’apéro:
Disclaimer: we sell this.
Very good! Base 2017. Disgorged 10/2024. 3.3g/l. Lot RS67. 100% PN. Lots of chewiness on this. All about red berries (griottes) and texture with a saline finish. Lots to like.
Great day. Friends I will miss but meet with again. I loved tasting with my friends and expanding the group over three years.
My goodbye present, signed by all:
