So I caught an interview with the CEO of Domino’s the other morning and he was talking about how they’d responded to social media pressure that their pizza was horrible. Apparently they changed everything… dough, cheese, sauce, etc… Is anyone here fearless enough to be able to offer a review?
In a pinch I will buy a $4 basic 4 cheese pizza at Trader Joe’s and ‘customize’ it, but I haven’t had the courage to go near a chain pizza place in many years. Any input on Domino’s (or Papa John’s maybe)???
I’ve heard the same thing but despite my curiosity I haven’t been able to bring myself to try it. Too many bad memories of horrible pizza from college (they were the only ones with late night delivery). And that was a long time ago.
I’m in NYC. There really is no sane reason for me to order chain pizza. My area of Queens does not have any particularly outstanding pizza, but I would still buy the local stuff before ordering Domino’s or Papa John’s. Occasionally I’ll try a 99 cent slice around town, some have tasted like that pre-fab type of pizza. In my experience, quality pizza is far more consistent in northern NJ.
I haven’t had it for years. There is a local pizza “chain” (used to be Pizza Express now Pizza X) where I live that basically took over the delivery market, I would guess, because Domino’s was soooo bad. I just haven’t had the need or the guts to try.
+1. Whether we were having a late night study session or a late night card game, Domino’s was the only game in town in terms of pizza delivery. I haven’t ordered it since then.
For chain pizza delivery, Papa John’s isn’t bad, as long as you get the basic pizza with a few ingredients. Still, I almost always have frozen dough on hand, so I can whip up a homemade pie pretty quickly that
is better than most chain pizza delivery places.
Order it quite a bit (7 yr old and a 4 yr old) - the reality is, the thin crust is actually more than passable and defeats standard “Chicago” pizza, pan or ‘hand tossed’ dough bombs easily.
Best deal at UCLA when I was there, was delivery Thai from “Chili Thai”. They’d always have doorknob coupons for buy-two-get-one-free. Meal specials were ~$5-6. Got three meals for $15. I never bothered with pizza.
If one didn’t mind the walk, “Buck fiddys” had ~$1.75 (or was it $2?) 10" sandwiches. used to be $1.50 (hence the nickname buck fiddys) but prices creeped up. Also the health grade was not very reassuring. But it was cheap!!!
Dominos is amazing…if you are going for take out greasy pizza. Which during college football season is pretty much a bi-weekly ritual for us. I prefer dominos thin crust over everything else they make. Also, their app and web ordering system are really good. I prefer Dominos to pizza hut, papa johns, little caesars et al.
I understand that Papa Johns can vary greatly in quality. The one near me is godawful so I was surprised when Arnold said he liked Papa Johns pizza. Being an attentive boyfriend I ordered it one night for dinner. He took one bit and said it was some of the worst pizza he’d ever had and nothing like the branch in Staten Island.
As Brent mentioned, living in NYC there’s no rationale to order chain pizza. I had a few in college and found them so dreadful that I quickly concluded that, being in Pennsylvania, I should switch to cheesesteaks for the duration of my college stay.
This was the first thing I thought of after I posted. For parents, I’m sure ordering Domino’s for the kids vs. fighting with them over ordering the ‘local’ place or acquiescing to an even worse fast food alternative is an extremely sane decision.
UCLA students are spoiled now - they can get a margherita pizza from 800 Degrees for $6.45 or a bianco for $5.65 and it’s one of the best pies in town.
I live in a town where chains are the only way to get pizza delivered. That plus 2 teens means we’ve eaten a lot of chain pizza. I’m not a big fan of any of them but haven’t tried Dominos in a while so I may give the thin crust a go. It used to be more like a cracker crust than pizza dough. Pappa Johns is OK I guess but still not really good pizza. Their wings are awful, at least at our location. I’m not a purist either with pizza. I love a good pizza margherita, but may favorite may be thin crust with light tomato sauce, cheese, and fresh garlic. There is one local place that makes decent pizza, but having to drive limits the opportunities.
