I’d never heard of this domaine before but they certainly seem like Meadows’ NBF based on his just released reviews of 09 Cote d’or whites. Very reasonable prices and looks like a style I would enjoy based on Allen’s and others’ (CT) notes. Anyone have much experience with them?
Dan
PS I recall that the winemaker, patrick essa, was a regular poster on ebob but haven’t seen him over here…
quality wines that I’ve recently started to cellar. I don’t know about their premox history and will check the wiki. Perhaps someone should invite Patrick over here; I enjoyed his posts. (I just checked–he registered in 09 but no posts. I send him an email to come back!)

I think that Scott Wright reps them. (aka, Scott Paul) (aka, that guy who makes wine in Oregon).
Just bought a case of the goutte d’or. Will be only the 2nd full case of white burgundy I have bought since 2007. At these prices and (reported) quality, the POX risk works for me.
I like their wines a good bit and visited the domaine and Patrick Essa about 4 years ago when I was last in Burgundy. Very pure, elegant white Burgundies and Volnays.
I met Patrick last summer at Scott Paul and really enjoyed his wines, then visited last Fall when in Burgundy. Patrick and his wife Kate (Michel’s daughter) were wonderful hosts. Several hours spent barrel tasting, then on to some special older gems. If you havent had the pleasure, try a bottle. Great value.
'05 Goutte d’Or might be the best young white Burgundy I’ve had. Glad to see them getting some overdue recognition. What did Meadows say about the 2009s?
The wines are fabulous. Really clean and pure. Patrick Essa is a wonderful person.
We tried the 1978 Meursault from old vines in his cellar. At first the wine was a bit reduced with hints of orange peel. It immediately blew off and there were beautiful white flower aromatics, it became very clean with great acidity and minerality.
A friend got some of his '04s but so far I’ve only tried a single bottle, the '04 Meursault Charmes. This was last summer and unfortunately it wasn’t showing very good – perhaps some early oxidation and a rather clipped, drying finish. At least from the limited evidence posted on the Wiki Oxidized Burgs site, that bottling seems to have had some issues.
Quick guys, buy up!! BH reviews are out ![wow [wow.gif]](/uploads/db3686/original/2X/7/7d450e9830889c8943b674446a21b7254cad657e.gif)
Mike, I’ve already purchased. After tasting a '72 Bouchéres with Patrick, I knew he was the real deal. THe wine was still alive and kicking. A real Wow experience!
Roger, I wish they were available in NZ. I see 07 1er’s are still available in the US for under $60.00 ![cry [cry.gif]](/uploads/db3686/original/2X/8/853b6e76c6e8406be77a6727c2a27ad1672678b3.gif)
I have purchased a mixed case or so of every vintage from 2004.
Needless to say the wines impress me - they’re ralatively large scaled Meursaults.
Cracked an 07 Cras last night which was singing, with good detail and precision and more nervosite than preceding vintages.
The 04s and 05s were IMO a bit old fashioned in style and I am hoping that the 07s mark a transition to wines with more minerality and freshness.
Kent, do you know if there are any 07’s still available in Aussi? Cheers Mike
Very good wines that have been priced extremely fairly in the past. Happy to have a few stashed away.
Goutte d’or 95pts, Charmes 94, etc etc down to VV 90. “I have noted this before but the quality coming out of this domaine in recent years is nothing short of spectacular. 2008 saw them fashion some excellent wines but they have outdone themselves in 2009 as everything is outstanding and they have made some of the top wines of the vintage. If you aren’t familiar with the wines, you should be, at least if you enjoy classically styled whites.”
I visited and bought for 3 consecutive years, Patrick is a great guy, but his wife and parents in law are also extremely nice, the father a great character … a real burgundy “grower” in the old sense who knows his vines …
Fine quality, from Gouttes d´Or and Charmes down to the Villages and even the Aligoté ist far too good to make Kir out of it.
Meursault Tesson is the q/p hit …
Mike,
The B-Cs are imported privately and do not hit retail here.
Cheers,
Kent
isn’t Patrick too young to have been involved with making that almost 40 year old wine? How did that wine influence you to consider Patrick to be the real deal?
alan
Your right Alan. This was Michel’s wine. But I believe he is carrying on with the same winemaking practices as his father in law (and same dirt). I became introduced and impressed with his wines last summer at Scott Paul and had the pleasure of meeting both he and Kate. At the time, I thought the 08 Boucheres was exceptional. Thus, a visit to the property was a must.
