to which my waitress replies, “we have lots of 2007s, which wine are you after?”
The customer, who has already closed the wine list offers the clarification - "Item number 2007 please’
Waitress informs diner that the 2007 refers to the vintage of the wine. Seems the customer thought the wine list should be treated like amenu in a Chinese restaurant.
First time I’ve ever come across that situation and certainly gave me a fair chuckle.
I’ve actually seen this before, most often times with wines that people are probably embarrassed to try to pronounce at the risk of butchering the name and being corrected. More often than not, I usually end up having to order the wine by number b/c the person taking my order gives me a blank stare!
I have a friend whose aging mother, when she’s coming to visit, always insists she’s arriving on Boeing Airlines flight #757. This reminded me of that.
Sometimes goes the other way. My buddy who doesn’t really know anything about wine went to a wine shop and asked for a couple Chianti’s. He walked away with a Spanish Tempranillo and an Italian Cabernet. Worst wine shop ever.
A couple of days ago: “O don’t know any of these wines but you guys must have good taste…you’re playing Cannonball Adderly. What should I drink tonight?”
Me: Have you tried this Pinot? (I reference a wine on their list)
Somm: Yes, its very highly allocated
Me: Well, what about this wine? (I reference another wine on their list)
Somm: A good wine, its very highly allocated
Me: Have you tried this Burgundy?
Somm: Yes, its very highly allocated
Me: Um…ok, did it have any brett?
Somm: Yes, it is from the brett region of France…very highly allocated
Me: (Blank stare)
The guy apparently thought “highly allocated” was the highest praise possible for a wine.
A few minutes before this exchange he yells at a waiter right in front of our table
Waiter: “Would you care for some wine?”
Diner: “I’ll have the savenierre.”
Waiter (pointing to the left side of the menu): " Uh…what number is that?"
Diner: “…it’s number…savenierre!”
You have obviously never shopped in the wine specialty stores in PA. You may, and I mean may, find possibly 1 salesperson in any store who knows anything about wine. I cringe everytime I hear a customer ask a salesperson for a suggestion. Combine government ownership with union rules, and what do you get, dumb and dumber (about wine), although some clerks are at least very pleasant. Almost fainted yesterday–went to the specialty store where I have special orders delivered and the clerk actually greeted me by name.
What both amuses and irritates me is when I order a wine by the name and the server looks blankly at me and asks me to point out the bin number on the wine list. (“Ah! Number 2007! Very good.”)
