Crown Shy Wine List help

Hi;

Will be going to Crown Shy with another couple who like wine but aren’t used to NYC wine list prices - (and neither am I.)

Normally, I"d BYO, but not sure I can that night due to logistics (going straight from the Brooklyn Museum).

Any Old World suggestions for a white and a red under $125 each, and perhaps a red under $200?

Leaning towards Bourgogne Blanc, but I don’t have much experience with it; when I accumulated my cellar, White Burg PC was priced more modestly (though I love Pillot, and they have Lafon Bourgogne Blanc). I looked at the Beaujolais but can’t figure out anything about the producers. H Lignier had a Bourgogne Rouge - older vintages get good comments).

Thanks in advance!

There’s a ton of whites that are better values in the low 200s.

If you’re sticking to strict 125 budget

Envínate, Valle de la Orotava ‘Palo Blanco’ 2020

I would definitely figure this out before visiting. My brother took us there a couple of years back and when my brother asked the somm for a rec on something interesting under $100, her response was something along the lines of “well Burgundy is interesting, but it wont be under $100”. She was stumped by the question And I finally asked for a bottle of 2012 LRA Vina Ardanza. Big mistake - tasted like a bottle of vanilla.

Ouch, those prices are rough… 2011 Rougeard Breze for $1k+ ?? Cotat Mont Damens for $300? OMG, I would just drink beer or eat somewhere else… FU prices deserve a FU response, lol

But anyway, Cassiopee Aligote is a nice wine, $125 on the list. There are some decent Riesling options (e.g. Stein or Bründlmayer). The 2020 Envinate Palo Blanco is a great wine and reasonably priced.

For reds, again Cassiopee is reasonably priced.

I’m generally a fan of each domaine

Thibaud Boudignon Anjou 2021
Rousset-Martin ‘Veine Bleue de Bacchus’ 2016

You may be aware of the tragedy they suffered (James Kent, One of New York’s Most Celebrated Chefs, Has Died - Eater NY), and that they are closed today, Sunday the 16th, but posting this just in case…

Struggling to find any hidden gems. I do like Jean Rijckaert’s wines, but don’t know that Jura Chardonnay bottling and I suspect it’s marked up heavily. Likewise I like the Remelluri rioja reserva, but whilst technically ‘old world’ might not be the profile you envisaged when saying that!

Well . . . I guess it comes down to whether you want to ‘pay the piper’ or take control and bring your own wines. They allow 2 bottles and their corkage fee is $50 per - not outrageous compared to many. If you REALLY need to purchase something, see if they’ll waive the corkage with a single bottle purchase.

It the pricing is that outrageous, I would seriously stick to cocktails - hate these markups and they really make one not want to purchase off the list.

Cheers

Yes, sad and maybe I should have acknowledged it in my post. But I figure the kitchen will still function well on 6/29, I figured Kent wasn’t on the line there, more likely at Saga.

I usually agree, but need a nice place that far downtown (although I suppose I could go to Tribeca). Open to other suggestions that has vegetarian options other than risotto (which eliminates Chambers).

The problem with BYO is I will be going directly from the Brooklyn Museum. I’ve had a museum turn me down at coat check with wine in a neoprene carrier. Maybe if it’s in a gift wrapped box? Also, a little worried about the Coat Room temperature.

Thanks, Cellartracker notes are appealing and never had a Canary Islands wine.

Makes sense. Patronizing one of his places is commendable, full-stop. Hope you enjoy.

The Thibaud Boudignon Anjou 2021 looks very appealing from the Cellartracker notes, and a new domaine to me.

The east coast importer of Cotat has raised prices significantly starting with the 2020 vintage. The 22s are ~$110 msrp on the east coast now :exploding_head:

Not that any of this makes buying the wines any more palatable, but merely to provide some context for the pricing. I stopped buying Cotat from east coast retailers since they’re nearly double the cost of the west coast retailers

The Alexandre Filaine Champagne prices for both Cuvée Speciale and DMY, and Suenen Oiry aren’t terrible, but that isn’t an answer to your question.

A comparison: $790 plus T&T (?!) for ‘18 Dauvissat Clos. I paid 25% of that amount, including T&T, for ‘14 at Arpege in Oct.

I’d probably do the Pillot BB or splurge on the Lafon Meursault at 320 on whites. For reds, I LOVE Domaine de la grosse pierre Beaujolais, the 2020s are a bit richer/darker fruit than your Big 4 names, but very food friendly. Or would try one of the spatburgunders with a bit of age.

The 20 PYCM isn’t so bad

For reds there’s that 14 pavelot but it would be so much better to bring wine.

I’m sure you can check a wine bag. Just prechill the bottles and toss them in the bag before.

I did that in Vegas recently when I had to mule two bottles on a two mile walk in 100 degree weather, put them on ice then tossed them in the wine bag, they were still pretty cold when I got to the restaurant.

I wish I was a s confident, but as I said, was turned down once at a NYC museum. I am asking the museum (in writing) to see.

Thanks, which year on the BB.

Never had a Spatburgunders, open to trying one but not with an ignorant sommelier.

My wine bag looks like a laptop bag. You don’t think they’d let you check a briefcase?
