Going to Folly Beach in a couple of weeks and anticipate going to Charleston for some good meals. Any recommendations? Looking at Maison and Chez Nous currently, but happy to have other suggestions! Many thanks.
LOTS of traffic on the travel sub forum.
But for us (as locals).
Circa
Grocery
FIG
Ordinary
Nico and Red Drum in Mt Pleasant
Lewis or Leon’s for lunch
Warehouse at The Luxe is fun
Leons.
i’d put towards the top of the list based on the provenance of the owners.
It has been more than 5 years since I have eaten there, but so long as nothing has changed, Husk is a fantastic restaurant in Charleston. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
Fig was our favorite restaurant in Charleston during our visit in November 2022. We also really enjoyed circa and hanks.
Thx. No reservations available for Fig, sigh.
husk has more than jumped the shark. sucks i know. avoid.
you can try walking in early. a lot of times that works.
I’m always a fan of Husk also. and Malagon is really solid too.
Gotta check out Graft as well. love that place!
Also a big fan of Babas, though it might not be as much of a wine place.
For wine bars, +1 for Tippling House and Graft, especially on Sundays, when they have a food truck or two in the parking lot.
If true, too bad about Husk. I’ve had a number of really great meals there over the years.
Steve, what has happened there? Our last visit was 2015.
Since when? We ate an excellent dinner in the restaurant and a kick-ass fried chicken dinner in the bar right before the world turned to shit in late January 2020 when we were in town for a wedding and general shenanigans.
it seemed like it went corporate and the restaurant was a bad photocopy of the original. similar but certainly not the same. just like 65 cents on the dollar in ever aspect-service and food.
in a town like charleston there’s just so many better options. i think they’re just living off the reputation of years past.
my last visit was 2021. maybe it’s turned around. but having gone here annually from 2015-2018, it’s night and day.
Brock sold and left Charleston.
Would second the ordinary. Magnolias also a good option though I haven’t been in a few years.
We may be heading back to Charleston in a couple of months. I’m curious whether anyone has familiarity with Monarch wine shop. It looks solid.
really like Monarch and the owner. really dislike the website. doesnt really give a good idea of what’s actually in shop currently.
but good guy to talk to and always a good selection, if youre just looking for a straightforward wine shop, monarch is great. Graft is a bit more of a fun atmosphere (also a bar with food trucks as mentioned above, good music and hangout place)
Thanks for the confirmation and the tip!
“First rule of hipster wine shop is you don’t talk about hipster wine shop!”
30-something man with perfectly combed old-timey beard and well-coifed hair interjects meekly “But shouldn’t we have a good online store to advertise our authentic and limited production beverages!”
“You may have an online presence, but only if it is clunky, never up-to-date with actual inventory, and with functionality from 1999. This shall be deemed sufficiently authentic.”
Some good recs already in this thread, and I agree about Husk jumping the shark. The bar is still great, though.
One thing I didn’t see was the restaurant Chubby Fish. In my opinion the best seafood place in town alongside The Ordinary. It doesn’t take reservations, but it’s around the corner from the wine bar the Tippling House, which, as others have mentioned, is an amazing newcomer to the scene. I recommend getting on the wait list at Chubby Fish then walking around the corner to TH for a glass while you wait.
Another restaurant not yet mentioned is a bit out of the way towards Park Circle, but it is truly one of the most outstanding restaurants in Charleston - Jackrabbit Filly.
Agreed with Matt. Keep in mind Monarch is a shop that does tastings, not a wine bar. Graft is both, and definitely has a more hip atmosphere to hang out.
