What are the general impressions from professional reviewers for these wines? Not looking for individual scores. Thanks in advance.
Ceritas is one of my favorite CA Chardonnays, but with this latest price increase and the crazy shipping cost, I am sad to say this will be my last order.
Oof $125 for Occidental PN
That makes me worried for Cabernet prices this year and next.
Same, Really want some Porter-Bass Chardonnay for last vintage of it, but $100/bottle after tax and shipping…steep.
Ooh interesting…That’s too bad.
Yeah that price jump on the Occidental is painful but I still grabbed some and the Trout Gulch Chard so I’m set for this offer. Was hoping to pick up but they aren’t offering it.
Had 2nd bottle of the 2021 Charles Heintz Chard tonight. It’s a nice wine, but it’s a 90pts wine - a buck a point! To me, that’s steep when Lioco’s Russian River Chard to me was a 94pts wine, at a third of the price…
That’s my feeling too. Good wines, but the price is tough to justify in light of so many other great producers out there that charge so much less.
I think going forward Goodfellow is going to be my go to source for great Chardonnay at a great price.
I have to agree - Rhys fell victim due to the relative value in OR and even the Macon for that matter!
Agreed. While I love Ceritas chard, I think the Trout Gulch from Arnot-Roberts is just as strong and quite a bit more affordable.
I much like the Arnot-Roberts wines - particularly their Trout Gulch wines (Pinot and Chardonnay) - for me, their $60 Chardonnay is close to the upper limit.
I like Jamie Kutch’s Trout Gulch Chardonnay as well. Last price was ‘only’ $54.
If anyone has the May 2023 Ceritas newsletter would you mind sending me a copy? Their site hasn’t been updated recently.

2021 PETER MARTIN RAY CHARDONNAY / SANTA CRUZ MOUNTAINS
A decade of excellence.
High above it all sits Peter Martin Ray Vineyard.
In the Northern Santa Cruz Mountains, soils are different from those to the south. Rocky, metamorphic stones create a folded and jagged vineyard carpet resulting in an environment that produces wines of intensity and thoughtfulness.
Dry-farmed Chardonnay from the early 1970’s rarely found elsewhere, Peter Martin Ray is singular in its expression – savory, earthy, and long-lived. It’s a place anchored in the OG of California.
2021 Tasting Note
These old vines have yielded a thrilling 40th vintage. Pineapple, beeswax, and delicate lavender dominate the nose. An intense wine, the palate effortlessly combines a tingling core of acid with the classic alpine weight only elevation can provide. One of the true heritage sites in California, in a fantastic vintage. Magical.
2021 ZEPHYR CHARDONNAY / SONOMA COAST
Spitfire. Specifically Pacific.
Imagine a vineyard staring at a valley filled with coastal fog. Redwood trees whip around as the cool ocean air slides across this land. Here at Zephyr, Chardonnay ripens slowly, bringing forth the savory flavors you often find in our mountain wines from Santa Cruz, but with a clear, linear freshness that reminds you of its origins. Being farmed with meticulous care by our good friend Greg Adams for the past 18 years allows us to manage each row with precision to grow optimized grapes expressing the purity of the site.
2021 Tasting Note
This is a punishing, marginal place to grow grapes. In the glass, a brilliant white-gold color gives way to an aroma of lemon oil, underripe stone fruit, and ocean spray. The wind and the cold at the site can be felt in the mouth, where thick-skinned berries have given phenolic heft to the wine. A nervy vein of freshness lifts the whole experience.
2021 ELLIOTT PINOT NOIR / WEST SONOMA COAST
The girl next door.
Far out on the coast, where loggers and people just looking to get back to the land live is where you often find the most inspiring vineyards. Elliott is one of those places. Here the second generation, Elisa Hellenthal, tends to the land and vines from which this wine comes. Planting in the late 1970s meant clonal diversity was scarce. Luckily one of the clones from the famed Mt.Eden Vineyard was available and is now planted here.
2021 Tasting Note
Fermented with half the berries left on their stems. Dark, brooding red fruits marry with lingering scents of forest floor and oolong tea on the nose. Thin, rocky soils deliver a sense of concentration to this wine with juicy pomegranate and fresh blood orange dancing on the palate. A punchy, yet refined tannin structure promises ageability.
2021 HELLENTHAL PINOT NOIR / WEST SONOMA COAST
One and only.
High up in the mountainous Fort-Ross Seaview appellation of the West Sonoma Coast there is little resemblance to the other areas from which we make wine. Hellenthal is situated on the northern flanks of this area at 1,300 feet elevation. Coastal fog winds its way up the Gualala River bringing the influence of the Pacific right up to the feet of the vineyard. This is the oldest own-rooted Pinot Noir on the Sonoma Coast – planted in 1980 in partnership with David Hirsch, Gard Hellenthal took a leap of faith and it paid off in spades. Small berries the size of a pea give depth and concentration while retaining natural acidity. Unique and unlike any other site we work with. Monopole.
2021 Tasting Note
The textbook definition of West Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir. Sitting 82 feet lower than its neighbor Elliott, these fertile clay-rich soils yield a wine that is always a touch more refined and elegant. A 60% whole cluster fermentation gives a subtle sense of herbaceous complexity to the pure red fruits. Truly a Grand Cru site in Northern California.
New special releases. $42 for rosé, $125 for this new Astra chard that I have not heard of previously. Seems steep, I’m passing on both. Slowly being priced out of Aubert and now Ceritas, sad! But the budget is the budget.
I have been a big Ceritas fan for over a decade and I also have stopped purchasing due to the ever increasing prices. Thankfully, Oregon Chardonnay has been a great substitute at a much lower price point. The Chardonnay being offered at $125 today only served to support my decision to move on. I wish them all the best and if they can sell out at these price points then kudos to them.
I have purchased the last 3-4 releases, I got the email about this release last week, but no email today re: the release. when I log into my account it says I have no current offers.
So I guess its an easy pass for me!!
I thought release date was Thursday the 13th.
Maybe Chris is on the special VIP list
I think Ceritas has a rolling email release based on length of time on their lists, purchase history, or whatever. At least, I’m pretty sure they had one in the past. The idea is to make it a bit less of a free-for-all for longer term customers who may be away from email when the offer hits.
