Catastrophic Fires In Napa and Sonoma

No, I think better off TO be traveling (and not in the area). Hoping for the best for all.

Brian, please take care, up there.

On the other hand, your reasoned reports here and on F/B are appreciated.

Best wishes to everyone in Sonoma and Napa, my thoughts are with you all.

Winds will carry burning embers for dozens of miles.

Any word from Yountville? Looks to be moving towards town from the east.

Terrible news Brian. Please be safe!

Everything East of Brush Creek Rd to the SR City limit is under mandatory evacuation orders!

I know this area well from the many trips over the years, and of the great people I have come to know from the area. Hell, we were just there 2 months ago, renting a house off Mark West Springs Road. When there, we wondered about how devastating it might be to see a fire come across from Calistoga and through the community there. Lots of homes and things built into that canyon as you go up the road to get to Calistoga.

Really makes me feel sad to see the community there affected. Everyone, hang in there. god bless.

Thank you to all who are thinking of me - I am extremely appreciative.

It was a wild night with the wind, and I have hours of work to do to clean up the debris on my property. The vineyard is untouched - it is the tall trees that took the brunt of the winds and dropped all that dead wood and pine cones galore!

I see my street was listed as voluntary evacuation. I went to our local store this morning, and they said officials will go to door if you are to be evacuated for sure.

I smell no smoke, and Diamond Mountain is totally visible. That is not where the trouble is around these parts. Last night around 10:00 I saw what I thought was the brightest red sunset, until I realized it was night time and it was fire. My tall, two-story house with the French doors looking west provided an amazing view. Sometimes when things are surreal, it takes a few moments to make sense of what is actually happening.

Still, I smell no smoke, though I can see plenty over to the west.

I am being watchful (and watching the Sox, of course), will do some cooking and pray it is all on the downswing.

I have no news of the winery where I crush, but it is located down where people are losing homes and wineries.

Also from the Press-Democrat:
"The fire also destroyed nearby eateries including the McDonald’s, the Mountain Mike’s Pizza on Cleveland and the Arby’s restaurant on Hopper."
These are literally right down the street from Siduri and Punchdown. Numerous other producers nearby as well.

Good to hear you are ok. And my best to the rest of you out there. Good luck with this.

Frightening account from the LA Times. 1,500 structures already lost.

Just read a friend’s parents home has been lost. And even more incredulous is hearing on the news that people are now looting evacuated homes.

Phone and power out in Healdsburg 1/2 mile NW of square hours ago with no fire in immediate area.
Hate to hear “zero control” as update on radio as recently as two hours ago and between 80-100 square miles effected.
Horrible disaste: thousands of structures will be gone, hopefully minimal human losses.

So glad you’re okay, Merrill.

Another good source for information as it comes in:

Glad you’re safe Merrill. Stay that way!

I made my post, but then went outside and saw there are new plumes of smoke spreading across the sky. Still over to the west. Our evacuation center is two miles closer to the fire than I am here at my place, so I am going nowhere. I am a little scared right now, but home is where I want to be.

Winery personnel can’t get close to the winery (Judd’s Hill) so for now I am fine, my property is fine, my cats are fine, but I don’t know about my 2016 and 2017 wines.

Glad to hear Carrie/Randy, Merrill, Brian and the others are safe. As a semi frequent visitor to the area, it scares the $hit out of me knowing where the fire has caused destruction. My wife and I are keeping fingers crossed that nobody gets killed.

Following this closely as we are supposed to travel to Napa this week. Praying for all those dealing with this…
