I think 17?
Happy Cab Franc day to all! Happy hour is almost here! ![]()
Gosh I haven’t had that one, was on my mind because i sent it to my brother in law and he seemed to describe it that way. Thought it had “nice acid”. But I was gonna suggest you make the recommendation. 7 and 32 also come to my mind if we are talking cabs.
A very good point - but people tend to have ‘preferences’ just like music.
Someone who loves Chinon may want to drink a modern, hedonistic donestic cab franc once in a while, but that would not be their go to.
Hopefully that clarifies my commments.
Cheers
A good comment - but again, very subjective based on how sensitive you are acidity.
Cheers
32 Stags Leap is anti boom boom
Only one I have tried so far though
And how many dNs did you find AWFE?
Cheers
yep, that and Lot 23 Knights Valley…
Never had one.
Bought less than a dozen bottles from the original CH. none from dN.
Mostly bought for friends on Cam X I think it’s a unique timing right now. I’ve always had the belief that the bulk market is lesser quality juice. Now I think better quality is hitting the market due to the pressure on sales.
Cam does throw in a few extra clues into the email on lot 5 repeat offer. $200+, 90% new oak, similar mix to their flagship offering…that is a new marketing technique that I’ve not seen cam use.
good catch…fixed
Lot 5 - 2023 Peter Michael L’Esprit des Pavots
Do the added clues change the source guess?
I have been thinking about this. I think it suggests the wine is more likely made for Peter Michael Les Pavots, not Peter Michael L’Esprit des Pavots. However, I don’t think it is the exact bottling blend as Les Pavots is 100% Alexander Valley (nominally) and this has 11% Oakville mixed in. What Cam is likely alluding to in looking at the compositions from an appellation perspective is that L’Esprit is like 50% Oakville, while Lot 5 has Oakville at 11% which is a lot closer to the nominal 0% in Les Pavots. The othrt missing piece is 90% new french oak. Both Peter Michael wines are at 70%, but perhaps this was leftover barrel aged juice so the numbers don’t quite add up. And then they added some Oakville juice to it because they had it leftover too.
Either that or it’s an entirely different estate – in all fairness we’ve zeroed in on Peter Michael because of the Knight’s Valley / Oakville thing, but the offer never said the Oakville component was estate grown.
Edit: Never mind on that french oak comment, I just found a source saying that a more recent vintage of Les Pavots is 100% french oak. Which makes everything add up if 89% of Lot 5 is Les Pavots, 11% is non-oak-aged Oakville intended for blending into L’Espirit. Also makes sense why they are bulking it out, because they have no label for a wine that has this composition.
The family tasting panel is very excited that they are pushing some product ![]()
“Lot 5 features a hedonistic bouquet of plum reduction, graphite, cigar leaf and cocoa powder. The complexion of the bouquet darkens as it complexes, adding creme de mure, red rock, powdered violets with hints of garrigue. Uber-plush on the palate, cascading a magic carpet ride of purple and black fruit, chocolate, and toasty french oak all riding a deliciously chewy tannin structure. Succulent as all get-out yet perfectly integrated and harmonious, all the elements are seamlessly balanced with lush, concentrated fruit supported by fresh acidity in a long, glorious and epic finish that never seems to end. Exquisite in every way, this Cab-based Bordeaux blend will absolutely knock your socks off!”
Looking at Cam’s recent notes. I will say one thing that really stood out in our tasting: “silky,” “integrated” were common comments (which I think Cam is describing here), especially compared to the others in the Cab sampler.
The last comment made me LOL. It was my number one overall, and my notes were “dark red fruit, silky, knocking my socks off”
I will say, it is quite overt oak, so be wary if you aren’t into that.
Where are you finding info on the 2023 Peter Michael releases?
This was the 2021: 'Les Pavots', Peter Michael - Skurnik Wines & Spirits
I don’t think we’ll get any info on the 2023 releases for a while. Which may be one reason these wineries are willing to bulk out to Cam with the level of info he gives out as any guesses have to be benchmarked against these old wines so that it is always impossible to pinpoint anything exactly. I am looking forward to going back in a year or two and seeing if some of our guesses match the blends of the released wines though!
I’ll be finally getting about 10 cases delivered (South Florida, so I chose to wait for cooler weather). I had it redirected to a UPS Access Point so they don’t sit in the truck the whole day. I’m usually late afternoon with their route.
What’s been the experience with UPS charging a fee or not? And while I get tipping the driver, would you also tip the person at the counter at pickup? It’s a little odd, though in my case I see my cases are ending up split in consecutive days.
I personally didn’t tip because I walked to the storage shelves and carried the (four)
boxes all the way to my car. I’m 70, too. But, I didn’t mind. In fact, I felt a little bad sending them to an access point but I would have felt bad for the driver to schlep four boxes to my porch. I try to meet them halfway to the truck if I can see them coming. No extra charge from the official access point, though.
Is the BOGO deal done now
Looks like it.
