I did a mix of 31 and 20 – my only Black Friday purchase at Cam X. As I was playing with some possible pack options it really struck me that there is quite a large price spread between the pinots and the cabs. The top cabs are $20/bottle if you do a 6-pack; the pinots are like $10. Good news right now for the pinot enjoyers! And the cheapskates! The old De Negoce making all their offers $25/bottle is what pushed me away from them.
Good thing I picked up a 6pk on the BF sale, I hadn’t purchased any of 24 either.
Still surprising that Lot 25 is available with the good reviews and only 110cases.
My mind is blown that 24 is gone before 25. I mean, 24 is good. But still makes no sense.
Lot 20 with actual age is gonna go toe to toe with aged Kistler. Haters gonna hate but I can already tell it has the elements in there to get there.
It may be the best of all the wines so far that CamX has released.
I added 2 cases of 20 over the wkd.
I have somehow built up another 15 cases yet to be shipped …
Sorta pissed Cyber Monday did not bring Lot 50
Wut? We will just agree to disagree here. #20 is huge, massive, burly pinot. I doubt it becomes anything special with time, unless that’s the style you like.
Haha. I disagree. It’s a bit burlier, but not massive. It’s just absurdly young.
And lacks structure, freshness, acidity… Hey, if we all liked the same thing, this would be a boring hobby!
#20 is a Cab lovers Pinot. For me, as a Cab lover, I rather drink… Cabs ![]()
I knew I’d ruffle some feathers. I think it has those elements. It’s a little bigger up front but in a couple years, will be much more tame.
For $11 on average you cant really ask for much. Pegging this against Littorai or DDLC it’s crazily hedonistic and it’s totally fine for my Tuesday wine. I think this will fare well in the 10Y horizon. Hope Lot 50 is SRH or OR Pinot.
I never said anything about QPR.
It’s great if someone wants that style of PN.
But to me it’s definitely not the best of all the wines CamX has released.
Taste plays a massive role. Way more so than…is this Paul Hobbs or is this Venge. I’m glad we had the opportunity to sample and rebuy here.
Doubt it will be like aged Kistler tho. My family and friends love Lot 20 so it’s nice to stock up for them to raid the Cam X cellar and not my actual cellar ![]()
Exactly. We could all just buy lesser wines, like Burgundy.
Or be assholes like D… no names mentioned.
I just don’t think #20 has the actual structure to age. It has muscles but it lacks acidity and I think it falls flat on it’s face instead of developing from where it is. It’ll find a sweet spot in a few years, then probably just wither away.
I’m often wrong, happy to prove myself that again with my case of it.
I think Mikko is being fair – for those who have the budget to regularly be drinking >$80 wine, if it’s $11 or not is immaterial. The wine has to be actually good enough to compete at that price level.
I will say I wonder if there’s some bottle variation going on – hopefully not! Similar discussion of Lot 28 in the other thread. I did not feel like Lot 20 had issues with acid in the two bottles I tried, at least for near-term enjoyment. No idea about how it will age, so I totally defer to those with more experience tasting young wine and projecting forward.
FWIW the 2023 VD Ueberroth vineyard, our candidate for this wine, had a TA of 5.1 g/l which I think is on the lower end for pinot noir, right? All their PNs are around this number suggesting it is their house style. Plus, I don’t think we should expect 2024 to be any more acidic. The blurb on their website suggests they think it will age for 5-8 years, which is certainly more medium term than long term.
Ya’ll are CRAZY if you think for a second that lot 50 will be a Pinot!!!
All big lots under dN were Cabs, and I’m here for that. Have withstood the BF/CM sale so that I roll 2-3 cases deep on lot 50! ![]()
My guess for X50:
Rutherford CS 2023!
Maybe, Howell Mountain, Atlas Peak?
or,
San Joaquin Valley French Colombard 2025? ![]()
Lot 50 will obviously be DRC (Domaine de la Roxy-Cam)
California wine increased from 7% to 54% of my cellar holdings with the introduction of Cam X. I plan on retiring in a few years and hope to have a pallet of daily drinkers available in my twilight years.
