Need to get more. Its been awhile since I bought new stems. I am seeking everyday stems not trying to break the bank. What brand to you recommend?
Board favs are Grassl and Glasvin. I think they both have sales going on right now.
Fast and helpful. Greatly appreciated.
Hi Jay,
If you want a couple that will break the bank, I love the Jancis glass for white Burg and the Conterno glass for red.
cheers
Jeremy
I like the Grasl 1855 for red Burgs, the Liberte’ for all around or whites, and the Mineralite’ for whites and bubbly.
We used to use Zaltos but jeez they are delicate. Broke them way too often. We still break Grasls too, but not that often.
Glasvin is fantastic for the price. The best IMO is the zalto (but obviously expensive). I captures the feel of their universal glass. Skip the zalto bourdeaux.
Best glass I’ve ever used for Pinot noir, new world and old, and Grenache-based wines like CdP is the Grassl Cru. But they are not as inexpensive as I would call every day glasses but we’ll worth the cost.
Grassl cru is my favorite, and I have essentially every glass available, sensory is very nice just huge.
Definitely Grassl Cru. Unfortunately they are much more expensive than they used to be. I think COVID supply chain issues really did a number on the fine stemware business. Zaltos are sold out everywhere.
It takes a lot of energy to make crystal, and in the main European nations of Germany/Austria/CZ/Slovakia where they are making these, natural gas is being prioritized for other uses. So there can certainly be shortages in the US.
I don’t drink much pinot, but use Burgundy stems for Rhones and (some) Rioja, and have been perfectly happy with that varietal shape from the Ridel Vinum line, Spiegelau, and Nachtmann’s (the latter are teh outward flaring types, which have grown on me for highly aromatic wines).
I use the Riedel extreme burgundy glasses; 4pk is about $75:

Fit my balance of being nice, slightly modern but not too fancy, and machine made (so a little more durable and ok in the top rack of a dishwasher when needed).
If you can find hem Zalto
I’m quite happy with the Grassl Cru; in fact, I’m using one now (albeit to drink a young Barolo).
I’ve tried a bunch over the years, and tried them on at the same time against each other. Didn’t have a Zalto in the mix for those comparisons but the Grassl Cru provided the best experience in all cases.
Grassl!
Grassl Cru is my favorite but if you are at all clumsy be prepared to continuously shell out for new glasses as they are extremely delicate. I’m down to my last one at the moment!
I have Grassl and Glasvin and I like them a lot, but they ain’t cheap! I don’t use them for every day drinking. I use my Schott Zwiesel or Reidel Extreme for that.
Grassl Cru is tough to beat for Burgundy. The Zaltos are superb but they are so fragile.
FWIW, Total Wine may have put a coupon in people’s accounts for 20% off Riedel products, limit 4.
I have no idea if their pricing is competitive (I suspect not) and if everyone is being extended the offer.
But if one cares, open the app and take a look.
Been loving the Grassl Cru glasses I got recently. Do folks use them for white Burgs, as well?
