No experience with that specific bottling, but…
In my experience, Maison Leroy (the negociant label) wines are among the worst QPRs you can find in all of Burgundy. You pay way too much for the Leroy name.
Agreed.
I’ll third that sentiment
What is the difference between maison Leroy and domaine Leroy?
Maison = negociant
Domaine = domaine
How much is it?
I totally agree with the posts above.
ok guys, i’ll take all your pre 1988 maison leroy for the cheap if you’d like
$50
Brown Derby has the 2000 Domaine Leroy Savigny-les-Beaune 1er Cru les Marconnets on offer for $49.95.
Problem is, Domaine Leroy doesn’t own vines in Marconnets…
I had the Maison Leroy Bourgogne Rouge 09 recently and I enjoyed the aromatics a lot, on the palate however it was very gloopy and big. If only it was as delicate and profound as on the nose…
Shoot me - I’m a huge Leroy fan - and yes, the prices are over the top - but I consider them to be one of the top names in Burgundy - and while they are on the top echelon of Burgundy pricing - you can usually find a bargain or two every year out of their portfolio - the older wines are just simply a complete revelation - I have a couple bottles left of their ‘69 Savigny Les Beaune and it’ been remarkable every time I’ve tasted it (paid $50 a bottle for it around ten years ago) -
QPR and Burgundy rarely cross paths -
There are some mind-boggling maison leroy wines (both before and after '88) and some terrible ones. A recent '99 bourgogne rouge went down the drain, but a recent '47 gevrey cazetiers was amazing, and a recent '74 savigny narbatons (I think it was narbatons) was excellent. Sometimes, a wine that looks exactly the same to outside appearances can be very different as with thew different bottles of '69 echezeaux, which ranged from ok to wonderful. Notwithstanding the very frustrating '69 echezeaux trick, “taste before you buy” is a pretty good rule of thumb, although the bourgogne blanc generally impresses every year.
I just remembered I also tasted a Maison Leroy Gevery Chambertin Estournelles St. Jacques 1986 which was great, very dirty, earthy, and animal like aromas with great fruit flavors and fresh acidity. The Volnay 01 on the other hand was much less impressive on the nose, but an ok tart red fruit flavor on the palate.
On cellartracker the labels shown for domaine and the maison are the same, how do u tell the difference?
Per a.gillette…“There are some mind-boggling maison leroy wines (both before and after '88) and some terrible ones. A recent '99 bourgogne rouge went down the drain”…yikes I have this wine
Lately the Domaine wines have a wax capsule whereas the Maison have normal capsules. Also on the label the Maison version near the bottom reads Mis en boutielle par Negociants, the Domaine label says Mis en boutielle au Domaine
Very easy to tell from the labels. At the bottom, the domaine bottles will read “Proprietaire a Vosne Romanee” and the negociant bottles will read “Negociants a Auxey Meursault”.
Define “for the cheap”, please.
Thank u for all the feedback…I will pass on the Leroy
