Yeah, the Clinet coming in at under $100 was surprising. The Pichon Baron coming in at $150 was…unwelcome. As good as I’m sure it is, I bought some 2000s recently for less. All I have left to await is the rest of the Pomerols.
Question on the 2016s. For example, I bought 2014 Rausan Segla for $55. What would I buy in 2016 for $55 that would be better than the 2014. I have not tasted any 2016s, so I cannot comment and it is easy to say that 2016 from Chateau x is better than Chateau x’s 2014. But dollar for dollar, where is the value in 2016?
A little late to this answer, but Total Wine Concierge program has had .375’s on virtually very offering. They’re also consistently the cheapest I’ve seen during this EP campaign.
"Thanks for your email and interest in the 2016 Bordeaux Futures. Unfortunately we are/will not be offering the Lanessan in ½ bottles. Whatever sizing is posted on the site is what is being offered and all sizes are offered at the same time. Thank you for your order and if there is anything else you need, just let us know.
The 2016 Rauzan Segla can be had for $80, and several critics say it is the best one ever. Take that for what it is worth. The Brane Cantenac and Domaine de Chevalier are $70; Giscours is $60. Marlatic-Lagraviere, Malescot St.-Exupery and Clos du Marquis are $55. Lagrange and La Lagune are $50. Gloria is $40. Cantemerle is $35. My personal favorite for value is Labegorce, which is $30, and is rated 94-96 by Neal Martin. Even if that is “wrong,” who gives a crap: it’s $30.
It’s hard to know what you mean by value. The 2014 Rauzan S. is obviously a very good wine: 94 VM, 92 WA, just to pick two measuring sticks. The 2016 Clos du Marquis is rated 93-95 WA, 91-94 VM. The 2016 Rauzan S. is rated 95-97 WA, 94-97 VM (the 2015, incidentally, is 96-98 WA, 93-96 VM). For me, the 2015 or 2016 Rauzan S. at $80 is a better value than the 2014 at $55; the 2014 Rauzan S. and 2016 Clos du Marquis are a wash. YMMV.
The Brits were generally low (casting Neal Martin as an American for these purposes). Jancis Robinson, for instance, cited an “'[a]wkward, stodgy finish,” then added “Not for me. Unripe phenolics.”
The 2014 Segla will be a lovely wine, and come around a lot quicker than the 15 or 16, you will be posting glowing tasting notes while the owners of 16 Marquis will be wondering if the tannins may outlive the wine. IMHO
Ducru came out today at $181. I had bee planning to buy 3 bottles, but at that price, could not pull the trigger. Will save my money and buy it in two years when it arrives. I will be surprised if it will cost any/much more.
I had exactly the same reaction. I love Ducru, but that price is hard to swallow. Approaching good back vintage territory. I bought Pichon Baron instead.
