Bordeaux 2016 vintage

2017 looks like a disaster. Lots of producers, especially on the right bank, will have little to no wine to offer, so factor that in as well.

I keep waiting to see 11, 12, and 13 being dumped, but haven’t to date. Has to happen though, right?

Some 12’s got dumped (to end retail customers) by Winex and K&L this spring. Maybe more has happened quietly.

I’m most excited about the Malescot St Exupery of any of the medium priced wines.

Have so far limited myself to a few Montrose, Lynch Bages and Malescot, with a couple 1-2 bottle pickups here or there. I am annoyed by the rise in prices. Even Rauzan-Segla seems like anything but a bargain to me now. Still holding out a candle for Figeac and La Conseillante - possibly my only Right Bank targets - but I am worried about price hikes. I am going nowhere near First Growths at over $500/bottle EP.

Ch. Canon has had rave reviews for past two vintages. How is the style? Those who know me: would I like it in 15-20 years?

I took the same approach, although I also factored in Chris Kissick, Roger Voss (WE) & Panos Kakaviatos (no Suckles!)… I used the scores & prices from liv-ex:
http://www.insights.liv-ex.com/bordeaux-2016-critic-scores

Attached is a .csv file combining the two… you can sort by median and mean (with Jancis calculated as 60 + 2*score). Note, the pricing I used is EUR *1.2 to get USD. It wouldn’t allow me to post an .xls file, so if you want the excel to manipulate, PM me.

edit, CSV not allowed either! pdf attached instead, sorted by median score.

I was saying the other night that I’m still afraid to open my 1996 and 2000 Lynch Bages, and every time I have the 1989 it seems like it’s still on the way up. I’m not sure more LB, Montrose, etc. are in my future.

I took the opportunity to buy a couple mixed cases of halves. While the prices were not as good as I would have liked, I’m satisfied with the mid-range wines I picked and that I think will be hard to find in halves later, at least without a markup. Ended up with:

d’Armailhac
Prieure Lichine
Lagrange
Pagodes de Cos
Capbern

And some Lanessan 750s for good measure. I think that’s it for me.

I’ve bit on a few where I felt there was reasonable value within the vintage and relative to back vintages:

Montrose and Cos holding the line relative to 2015 pricing and versus highly rated back vintages both worked for me (30-40% less than 2009/2010 for instance)
Canon really stood out to me as well, esp when you think about how the 2015’s are priced on the secondary market
Calon Segur seemed very reasonably priced as well
And Tour St. Christophe in the name of experimentation and others saying the style has been toned down in 2016…

Now waiting for LLC and Figeac to possibly break the bank…

Were I still in the Bordeaux futures hunt, I’d bite on some recent offerings. Some prices high relative to, say 2014 and maybe even 2015, but if the vintage is as solid or close to as solid as the critics’ hype, I just got some decent offerings today:

Lagrange - $46
Malescot - $55 (not my style, but solid price for the scores)
Phelan Segur - $42
Lafon Rochet - $44
Cantenac - $51
Canon - $95

Bought a few Domaine de Chevalier halves yesterday.

Phelan Segur seems to have self promoted themselves into the 3rd or 4th growths.

The Malescot scores are not that high, if you take out the Suckles… I have their median at 93.5, with lower scores from the Brits (15.5 from Jancis and 87 from Tim Atkin).

In that price bracket, I’ve gone in for:
Ormes de Pez - $30
Gloria - $40
Branaire Ducru - $55

And then also a mixed case of:
Calon Segur (median score of 97 @ $85)
Canon
Montrose
Cos (Panos called it a “return to classicism”)

Bobby: what are your thoughts on Malescot’s style? Hadn’t found them too oaky or overextracted in the past. Surprised you’d jump for Canon for same reason.

So far I’ve only bit on Cos because I’ve heard it is a return to a more classic style and was well priced. I’ve been tempted by others mentioned in this thread but am trying to focus on other regions at the moment.

And someone reduced their price already: Cheval Blanc either released a second tranche, or sold off the remaining first tranche, at a lower price than previously. Who knew multi-millionaires were price-sensitive?

Haven’t tried it since 2010, but up until then, Malescot was a poster child for new oak. 2005 got good scores too, I bought a few then sold 'em all after tasting.

This.

Check out Parker’s note on the 2010 as well.

I keep going back to the pricing…and buying more 2014s.

Same here! Have loved the ones that I have tried.

Just picked up my 2014’s from MacArthur. I bought singles of HB, Margaux and Mouton for my daughter’s birth year. Oh, and a 3L of Ducru. All those together wouldn’t get me two bottles of 2016 Cheval Blanc at $800/btl. I’m with Bobby on this one, hardcore.
