Beta Release 2023 (+Jasud)

I’ve only tried one Beta wine. It was about as far from MacDonald as I can imagine, frankly I never would have guessed it to be Cabernet, let alone Napa Cabernet. I hope to try more wines in the future, give. The wide praise, but I can imagine this wine driving demand the way MacDonald does.

Do you want to bet? Are they the same wines? No of course not. That is not the point. Will Ketan’s list for Jasud be as long as MacDonald in terms of waitlist in years to get on…I will give you 10 to 1 odds up to $10,000. But I might have some inside info. on where it stands today…

p.s. since most of his Beta wines are not Napa cabs that would make sense.

The 2014 montecillo was very un-cab like, perhaps too light/delicate and herbal did my taste but the 2017 is ridiculously good and made a believer out of me

I opened up a ‘14 Vare tonight - probably prodded on by the email:

2ish hour decant. Heady and perfumed nose - cedar. Palate still dominated by light, filigreed red fruit and plenty of acid. Some tea/herbs on palate, long finish with a bit of tartness. I think this is what counts as primary for this wine, but would be interested to see what this looks like in 6-8 years.

I had a similar experience. Didn’t love 2014 Montecillo, found it a bit angular, disjointed and herbal. But I loved 2016 Vare and it made a believer out of me.

Why so defensive? I’m simply curious to understand the comparison. Given what I know about the story, I hope the ventures are very successful.

Just kidding with you Alan. Since I have tasted all of the Jasud wines and have an inclining where things stand on supply and demand I have an unfair advantage.

16 vare was my epiphany wine for Beta (also the first I tried!) Tasted the 12 and 14 montecillo back in February. Both were stellar. Such great wines.

Any sense of whether email recipients would benefit from buying the 19 Beta to improve (likelihood of) 21 Jasud allocations?

Right now the mailing list is the same, right? (There isn’t one for Beta and one for Jasud)

I think they’re being offered at the same time.

Beta is sept. Jasud in oct.

I would believe so yes.

Is there a way to have the wine shipped slower? Last year the shipping prices were insane and someone mentioned that the price was for next day or something and it could be sent slower… 2 day or somethin. Anyone know anything about this?

Yes. In the past I have placed my order on the website and then asked by email for them to ship ground instead and they have refunded me the difference in shipping costs.

They do offer 2 day in the shipping selector, not only overnight FYI.

I don’t see a specific Beta/Jasud thread about tasting notes, etc, so I’ll ask here. I’ve purchased 2 bottles of the '18 Monticello and there are only 2 CT reviews (not recent). It is my wife’s birthday this weekend + the allocation opens up next week, so seems timely to maybe open one and try out of my first Beta wine. Are people still thinking 2-4+ hour decants?

I thought it might be based on Chuy purchases follow up email, but I’ll buy a few of the first release anyway.

I had a 18 Montecillo twice recently, once by coravin, the other with a 12 hour decant. Go for the 12 hour decent. Or better yet pop it the night before. It needs it

The 18 Maus is much more open and approachable
