Keeping up with this every couple of years, I figured now was a good time to bring this back up and update pricing. I changed tactic slightly, aiming to input a low price that would be reasonable to find rather than the lowest W-S price. I did not include EP this time around.
Yellow highlights are wines I’ve tried and would vouch for as being a good value, regardless of whether I liked them or not. I left in some bottles that went over $50 as a way of tracking some values.
Appreciate you doing this!
Here are some for your consideration.
Raul Perez Ultreia St. Jacques
Maranones Maranones
Vina Zorzal Malayeto
Terre Nere Etna Rosso
Terre Nere Etna Bianco
Orr Chenin Blanc
Gabin et Felix (Thierry) Richoux Irancy
Cantalupo Ghemme Anno Primo
Estate Argyros Assyrtiko
Most of these producers’ bottles are under $50 and I have enjoyed any I have tasted.
Tribute to Grace
Sandlands
Prima Materia
Evesham Woods/Haden Fig
Vallana
While I like the Ultreia Saint Jacques, for under $50 you can also get the single vineyards, which I think are definitely a step up. I love the El Rapolao.
Always a good listing, thanks for updating. I would suggest Saint Cosme’s Cotes du Rhone for consideration. In my market you can get it reliably for $16(US) and at that price I keep it in the house at all times. Consistent and over-delivers more than anything else I’ve had.
I keep talking this wine up and no one seems to care. I had it again last night and it is very good. $15 for a 1 liter and it is always on sale so you can get it for less than $10 per 750.
Was just thinking that Germany still runs circles around pretty much everywhere else in terms of what can be had for under $50. A sweeping generalization and there will be exceptions but overall it holds.
In a similar but not quite as versatile vein, Sherry.
Maybe Loire and Spain for honorable mentions.
Didn’t name names because there are too many.
Piedrasassi’s “PS” Syrah is killer for ~$30. Lower alc and more of the savory side. Good side by side with someone like Stolpman or Bedrock.
Bodkin’s light whites, Morgan (just about everything they make), and Alfaro’s “A” series should be checked out by anyone on a budget.
Obviously Zin and various field blends could make up a massive list, but I think Dashe and Limerick Lane have plenty that could be mentioned alongside your Bucklins, Carlisles, and Bedrocks
Yannick Cadiou is a pretty great unknown Chablis label that is well priced for now!
Thanks for the Berserker QPR love here for my Chenin and Royal Slope Red. I strive to over deliver at my pricepoint, so it’s nice to be noticed.
May I be so bold to bring your attention to my consulting client and BerserkerDay participant Baer Winery as well. Tastes more expensive than it is.
Happy harvest 2024 - we are pressing my Chenin blanc as I write this
Cheers,
Erica
