Best wines of 1993?

Hey all, looking to collect some '93s as it is my birth year but it seems like an all around bad vintage. I’ve had a '93 Mouton and Cheval Blanc, both let me down a bit.
Any recs? (Hopefully some Pinot Noir)

I’m a 1993 wedding year so I think about this quite a bit.

Tokay: great vintage
Champagne: actually good (I have more than I should because of it being our wedding year)
Burgundy: a really good year as well; my knowledge of burgundy is very lacking compared to many on this board but I’m sure they can point you to some really great ones
Cali: don’t underestimate it, I’ve had some good wines (Colgin Herb Lamb and Eisele and La Jota Anniversary, Dunn come to mind)

I’ve had some very lovely ‘93s from California including Forman, Togni, Montelena, Insignia and Dunn HM. Ridge Monte Bello and Laurel Glen are also very nice (SCM and Sonoma, respectively).

Expectations have to be adjusted as none are going to be 100-pt wines, but if you can find bottles with trustworthy provenance, they should all be very much alive and enjoyable.

1993 Rousseau Beze is otherworldly :wine_glass:

1993 Beaux Freres, 1993 Adelsheim Elizabeth Reserve, 1993 Ponzi Reserve. All delicious.

And I’d give a Boal or Malmsey Madeira a go too.

If you can source the 1993 Drouhin Clos des Mouches red, it’s a seriously good bottle of wine. Or at least was, drank my last bottle at least 10 years ago.

As a curveball, if you adjust your expectations for crazy bottle variation, the Tempier cuvées can be rewarding.

To add to my earlier comment – there are a lot of great 1993 red burgundies. Word is that 1993 white burgs are fantastic as well, but my experience there is limited.

For the red burgundies, most of the very top wines are priced in the stratosphere now. But there are a lot of really good wines that aren’t. The D’Angerville Taillepieds looks to be available for “merely” $415. The Lafarge Volnays, even the basic village wines, are all amazing if you can find them.

If I were looking for a truly top wine at ridiculous-but-not-too-ridiculous price, I see that the Drouhin Musigny is available for under $1500. I’ve had that wine twice, but not recently.

Thanks! Good Stuff

1993 Jadot lineup from Beaune can be excellent, as is most Volnay producers. From Napa, La Jota Anniversary is particularly good.

There’s some '93 Jadot Clos St. Jacques at http://www.mtcarmelwine.com/burgundy_list.html that’s just a hundred bucks more than current release price, and that is 5% of the cost of a bottle of Rousseau Beze or Chambertin.

This. Or other options from Languedoc/Provence would be Mas Daumas Gassac and Trevallon. Haven’t had the Trevallon in a while, but it used to be really good. I last had a bottle of the Gassac in late 2020 and thought it needed a few more years, so probably on point now.

What Todd said. The better producers in Oregon put out some beautiful age-worthy wines that year. 1993 was a bit over-shadowed by the intense 1994’s, but I’d bet most would prefer the good '93’s today…

I’d add Chehalem’s Reserve and Bethel Heights best to this list.

It’s been a decade since I had one but Bruno Giacosa outperformed the vintage’s general reputation as well.

Not a notable champagne vintage, but I have really enjoyed '93 DP, DP Rose and Clos des Goisses

You received some good advice. My advice is to look to producers more than the vintage. I’ve had some really good wines from 1993, as well as 2003, which was a weird vintage in many parts of the world. Where it was unmistakably a good vintage, was in central Europe if you have any interest in those wines. Someone mentioned Tokaj, (misspelled as Tokay) but also Germany and Austria.

Obviously there are some very good options in Burgundy, in both colors as the whites are less talked about but can be really excellent. In Bordeaux overall it’s a bit lackluster but 1993 Haut-Brion (as Larry mentions), La Mission and Lafleur are all really nice, the former especially good in large formats. Plenty of other good suggestions here though!
