This chunky concern never previously existed for me. Then I got a Zalto uni and a GGG. I pulled out a Riedel burg glass (veritas, maybe?) and was appalled at its weight and chunkiness. What a curse and talk about a first world problem. I found the Riedel Vinum Bordeaux a wonderful, elegant glass for years on end. Not anymore, I suppose.
It isn’t they perform any better in general…for some they perform better…some wines it might emphasize the alcohol too much…
But when you’re faced w/ using a normal glass that you used to think was great…you look at it, feel it…and think, wtf, this thing feels super chunky and I’m not enjoying this at all…
That said…after a minute or two or three…you get over that and you move on and forget about it…
I’ve had three of my six Gabriel-Glas Stand Art glasses break (that I bought in January at Berserker Day). Two broke in the dishwasher; bottom shelf, plenty of space around them, and delicate cycle and one broke at the stem when I was polishing it. Maybe the gold is sturdier–but won’t be buying these again. Bit frustrated that the packaging says dishwasher safe–when they obviously aren’t. I emailed the company and they gave me a discount code–but no warranty or replacements.
By contrast I have Zalto Uni, Zalto BDX and Riedel Vinum BDX. We got a new dishwasher and nanny and wife broke both Zalto, two vinum, but not my 3G. Its the most dainty but proven to be the most resilient.
I previously have used GGG and Zalto glasses, but now have predominantly switched over to using Sophienwald glasses after using them at Compline and a few other tasting rooms in Napa. I think its pretty good value.
after getting a set of the gabriel golds, i can say i prefer them to the zalto universal. i drank from the standard gabriel at a wine bar and was not impressed, the balance was off and the proportion was a little different from the gold version. overall it felt clunky. however, the golds are even more balanced compared to zaltos and quite possibly a touch thinner and lighter. zalto seems a bit top heavy by comparison. not to mention they can be had for about $30 a glass so half the price of zalto. i am sold.
for a cheap glass for use with lots of company i think the nachtmann vivendi pinot glass is excellent. usually you can find them on closeout; i paid about $5 per glass delivered. they are made by riedel and feature the same tulip shape which i find agreeable for practically everything.
Just as a data point, I’ve washed my GGGs on the top rack of my dishwasher dozens of times with no breakage so far. Most impressive was when a friend knocked one of his GGGs from a high table onto a tile floor and it didn’t break. Unfortunately for him, it shattered when he knocked it off the table a second time a couple of minutes later, but that it survived even one fall was pretty amazing.
On the breakage front, a different friend dealt with the propensity for Riedel Vinum Burgundy glasses to break off leaving just a 1/2” or so of the stem at the base of the bowl by making wooden stems for them.
I have Zalto and GGG, but when I’m drinking something simple (which is most of the time) with dinner, I reach for these same Riedels. Also, we have about a dozen for big groups.
Regarding the dishwasher, we have a Bosch that has fold-down holder thing for the stems. As long as nothing touches the glass, no breaks, and I’ve dishwashed all my glasses for a few years now.
