Has anyone tried Jancis Robinson’s glass? It’s supposed to be based on the zalto universal but more dishwasher safe and with more rounded angles. I’ve heard good things from one person who has tried it, but I haven’t seen it anywhere around here.
Wow that’s honestly really surprising, as they are really sturdy glasses. Were you holding it by the stem while you were polishing? That’s the only way I can picture it happening…as that method really would snap any glass at some point.
Also…I feel like the general rule of thumb if you’re going the dishwasher route is to use the top rack for nice glasses, right??
I must be dense as I have seen so many threads asking if glasses are dishwasher proof and never really understood the question. I am not sure if this means is it safe to wash the glasses in a dishwasher or safe to load. In both cases I’ve done this thousands of times with a much lower breakage rate than washing by hand. I did read once that running the dishwasher on a lower heat cycle keeps the pores from opening and less LT staining. No clue if true but I do run the dishwasher on a gentle cycle and not much detergent.
Counter to many it seems, I run fine stems in the bottom rack (for the height mainly) but they need to be positioned very carefully. If so they stay put and do not break. The danger lies if they flop over or worse flop to the side and hit an edge when sliding the rack in or out. I tend to put mine near the back center. I’ve actually broken more when positioned in the top rack as the base can stick up too much and bingo. More power to all those that wash by hand as that is really a labor of love.
Yes GGG and Zalto do just fine in a dishwasher
Yes there are some GG stems left on Commerce Corner from Don at $200/6
For those interested in a new glass. Stay tuned. I’ll be releasing a line shortly. Mouth blown. 4 styles. Same/Similar weight to GG and Zalto. We are almost finished with the site and they will be ready for WB days. Exciting stuff (well, for me).
Will be on the lookout for this. Similar in weight to the GGG or the machine made ones? The Golds are unbelievably light
4 stems. 1855, Mineralité, Liberté and Cru
Or genericaly speaking Bordeaux, White, Universal, Burgundy
Gabe Gold are in the 85 gram range. Our Liberté is coming off the line at 87-90. 4 grams is a US Nickel.
Our base is wider.
But we are right there on comparison basis if you’re holding a GG or a Zalto.
Excellent rec. An extra 20% off at Macy’s, bringing the price on a set to a shade under $64.
I bought a 2 pack of the GG Standard Art and 2 of the Gold. Both the Standart Art broke while drying them (I hand wash my glasses.) The Gold might be sturdier even though they’re more “fragile”.
Dang! I might just have to buy more at that near-giveaway price. Thanks, Steve!
I picked up one of the Jancis Robinson glasses at a recent Chianti tasting in New York (part of the price of admission). I have not yet put it through the dishwasher, but is is advertised as being very dishwasher safe. The glass is gorgeous. If it truly is dishwasher safe, then I cannot imagine a better universal glass. So light. Stem so thin. It made tasting through dozens of Chiantis a pleasure.
Wow!
Machine made Gabriel Glas.

I would be very interested in hearing more. Have you used it for other wines? Champagnes?
How does the size compare to other glasses like the Zalto universal?
I do not have the Zalto at home, but I would imagine that this JR glass might be smaller.
So fat I have only used the glass for Chianti, Etna Rosa, Mencia, Fiano di Avellino and a red Rioja. No champagne as of yet…so no help on you Champagne question either…sorry.
By the way, A+ on the grapes so far. I was even able to do side by side comparison with another good tasting glass, and the JR glass performed really well (better) in each instance.
I am a fan and wish I had a full set… but they are not inexpensive.

That’s exciting. I’m getting new glasses on BD; one way or another
Has anyone gone from GGG to Zalto Universal? Or the other direction? And why?
I drink a lot of riesling, and after my trip to the Mosel this year and seeing everyone there swearing by the Zalto Universals I’m tempted to get a glass or two to try out.

This is a beautiful glass… Thanks for posting as I am not a fan of the GGG’s or Zalto design. I may give these JR’s a try.

I prefer the GGG to Zalto Universals. The Zaltos feel a little top heavy by comparison, and I haven’t found that wines show any better in them than in GGGs. In limited comparisons of GGGs to Zalto Burgundys, I’ve found that it is about 50/50 which glass I prefer with a good Burgundy, but the Zaltos feel extremely top heavy and unbalanced so I stick with GGGs across the board.
it is a shame zalto gets all of the brand recognition when gabriel gold is a superior product. don’t get me wrong, zalto glasses are great and i still use mine, but the gabriel is just a better design. the only zalto glasses which come close to being balanced are the champagne and white wine glasses. there is certainly an awkward feeling to the universal and especially the burgundy stem.

I’ve done a side by side of Zalto Universal and GGG with German Riesling and red Burg, and have a slight preference for GGG. Decided to buy GGG. I hand wash and once accidentally applied too much pressure and snapped the stem. Other than that, no casualties. They have survived modest drops a couple times.

Wow!
The images I saw online for this glass were beautiful. I’d be interested in trying one if I can find it stateside for a decent price.
