Best Producers for $100 and Under Villages Level Burgundy

Father Jean Raphet made more traditional wines, sometimes bordering on rustic. Son Gerard since 2002 is more modern, but really elegant and seductive … the Chambolle Village in 2019 and 2020 is really fine for what it is and should be around 60.- (in Europe), the MoreySD is not bad either, a bit fuller but less elegant, both accessably quite early … if not THE BEST producer … definitely a very good one …
Clos de Beze and Clos Vougeot VV are great wines …

Are H-N and Trapet still under $100?

Thank you Gerhard, I am familiar with the father’s wines from the 90s - built to last. I know Gerard, the son, is now working in a new cellar, but have no idea about his vision on farming (has he evolved like other winemakers in the direction of more sustainable farming) and winemaking (he filters everything which makes the wines appealing young, but what about ageing?).

PS his clos de beze 99 was one of my first great burgundy wines.
PPS not singling out Gerard Raphet, but you don’t come across his name on the internet often!

Trapet certainly Is.

For HN easier to find CM under $100. VR I can certainly find it in $90-$100 range in the UK.

Gerard has health problems, he’s helped by daughter Marion now. He’s got very old vines, even in Village sites, farming is quite traditional not really biologic but sensible … afaic there is no filtering but partial destemming …
wines keep well, I had a 2002 Charmes-Ch in February witch was perfect and very fine.

My two top picks …

White: Jacques Carillon’s PM and CM. Chiseled and filigreed, with good dry extract.

Red: Ghislaine Barthod’s Chambolle. More approachable early than her 1er Crus, with a ferrous edge to plump fruit.

Bonus pour …

Rosé: Audoin’s Marsannay

For 2021 HN, the initial offers have been over $100, however, some of the later offers came in at $100. I passed on CM but grabbed a couple of VR out of curiosity.

Not sure if it was already mentioned, but Lamarche VR is a good one.
Joseph Drouhin offers some excellent GC and CM.

For whites there are a lot of outstanding values in Chablis, too numerous to list here. In CdB, there are also many outstanding villages to be had for under $100. Even PYCM can still be had (St. Aubin) for under $100. I like Boyer-Martenot in Meursault. Chavy-Chouet also looks promising.

Don’t 95%+ of Burgundy producers offer one or more village level wines for under $100?

I like the idea behind this thread, but not refining it further kind of makes it a soup of “name 100+ good or pretty good producers with no elaboration about specific wines.”

A lower $ limit, or red versus white, or village but meaning a certain level of village wine like Gevrey Chambertin, Chambolle Musigny, Puligny Montrachet, Meursault etc. rather than any village wine (Rully, Macon-Verze, etc.).

Sorry to be critical.

Ostrea still is.

You know how I feel about this…

I’m going to try and revive this since we had a good thing going here (I think at least :man_shrugging:t2:)

But I’m going to throw in a new requirement: the wines can only come from “major” villages within Burgundy (Gevrey, Chambolle, Puligny, etc.). I’ll throw Henri Gouges in here to start things off :tipping_hand_man:t2:.

Thank you all!

Domaine des Croix is hard to beat for the sub-$100 range

A recent 2021Jouan Coteaux Bourguignons was fantastic for $45.

For something a bit different Julien Guillot.

Simon Bize has a number of Savigny-les-Beaune Crus at under $100 that I think punch above their weight at their respective price points.
