Most cash back, reward, loyalty or other mileage programs are all basically the same in this dimension – they are set up to be beyond the purvey of financial regulators or normal contract behavior between the end customer and the “issuer”.
The consumers main defense is to simply monitor what the current anecdotes and practical net effective discounts are.

No, it just means someone else used them already. They were posted a couple of hours ago. That’s a lifetime. They were probably redeemed within minutes. It’s a big internet out there.

The Bordeaux options had been the thing keeping me around-ish, but I’m going way longer between purchases. The recent unreliability of cash back means I’ll never factor cash back as a certainty in my purchases. Prices have generally been not good to terrible to start, and $50/300 is rarely enough to get me excited. Cash back is just a bonus worth following up on, not part of my pricing consideration.
