There’s not a single bottle in the entire Laherte lineup that they ship to Texas, and the other champers I’m interested in are not good deals even with a discount.
*this is a Texas gripe more than a wine.com gripe.
About half of what I buy from them is a significant discount from market with the codes, the other half probably turns out roughly around market price but Stewardship makes it much more convenient to get it from them than a random wine-searcher source.
Neal, I hear you about their ‘starting prices’ especially if you are paying for shipping.
BUT, if you already have the Stewardship free shipping, the $20 off $50 creates many attractive prices on wines that you may have not have even previously thought that you wanted. Suddenly you not only WANT these wines, but it feels like you NEED these wines. e.g. 2011 Coutet 375ml starts at 27.99 (already very decent) and goes to 17.99 (extraordinary)
I have exercised some restraint in being ‘manipulated’, but I also succumb more than occasionally, as I did with the 2011 Coutet.
Normally with the discounts, if you use a good Rakuten or Retailmenot rebate, and especially if you also use Raise, I’d say that you should find tons of options at 20%+ off W-S low. Right now stocks seem very low though. Most of the good Champagne choices are out of stock (Bereche, Laherte, Chartogne, Larmandier, Roederer 242) at least for the price points which make $20 off $50 worthwhile. Many good Italian options also now out of stock. That said, I think there is still plenty worth buying, but it depends on your preferences and your warehouse.
Also, as a general suggestion, the Jean-Claude Marsanne Syrah Ardeche Cuvee Mauve at $32 works well with something like an LRA Alberdi to squeak over $50. The Cuvee Mauve reminds me a lot of Gonon’s Iles Feray, with really fresh blackberry fruit and N. Rhone style in a mode meant for early drinking. Since the Iles Feray is nearly unobtainable now I think this is a solid replacement. I really like it for around $20.
My go-to for a 20/50 if I couldn’t find anything else was another bottle of Taylor 20, but they are even out of that at the moment (at least for me). I bought '11 Coutet earlier in the year but may need to go with more of that. A bunch of stuff I’ve hit lately is gone.
I also bought some 2009 Tondonia recently. Not the screaming deal that some are, as their starting price is so high, but that is one I was going to buy anyway and with a 20/50 and StewardShip, it still comes out cheaper (if not by a ton) than anywhere else.
That Coutet is good stuff. Almost picked some up but my wife is not too into the dessert wines and I’ve got a bottle of the '11 and '15. Went back and forth on how to use santa20. Berlucchi Guido Franciacorta Cuvée '61 Rosé with a filler is not a bad price and it’s a WS Top 100 so could be fun to try. Couple of Louis Roederer Collection 242 375s would come in at $25/each which is not great but would be nice to have around. Some Pierre Paillard available which I’ve never had but from reading reviews not sure if it is my style. Played it save with the Heidsieck Champagne Brut Réserve .
Another half-bottle possibility for using the $20 off $50 might be a couple of bottles of Laurent-Perrier La Cuvee NV. LP proclaims that it is made from the “purest grape juice”, though I think something might be lost in that translation. Still, more than decent IMHO in it price range. $27.99 => $17.99
Adding HOLLY20 as another $20 off $50, don’t know when it expires. So far I’m scheduled to receive on Monday 7 bottles of individually shipped wines. Nothing makes sense, but I’ll take it!
Did anyone find decently priced Pinots on WDC (CA) around the $50 mark?
Looking specifically at Burgundy, Oregon, STA Rita Hills and maybe Patagonia/OZ/NZ. Basically cool climate.
I prefer the 242, but no halves or fulls available in FL. When both sizes of the 242 were available, the 750 @ $55 was a far better value/coupon opportunity than the 375 @ $37 in my area.
