Best Burg GC QPR?

In your opinion, which of those small “hills of gold” offers the best bang for the buck?

No that I have much experience with most grand crus, but I must say that Echezeaux is rarely disappointing and I keep seeing more and more offers for both young and somewhat aged examples at under $100.

Clos des Lambrays

I like this thread.

I’ve had good luck with some Clos de la Roche at very good prices.

There is some good Beze out there for less than astronomical sums.

But…the mantra…
(producer x3)

Clos des Lambrays is a good answer also because it is a monopol.

Corton in red.

Fixed.

I agree with Red Corton. Takes some time, but it is consistent and they are often available for under $75 from solid producers.

True.

Charmes is quite variable, but in good hands (Ray Walker for example) it can be very fine.

Clos des Lambrays & Clos St. Denis for me.

the mazoyeres chambertin i’ve had have been great, and the Maison Ilan price is really something… haven’t tasted ray’s mazoyeres though

Clos des Lambrays is a good answer also because it is a monopol.

Hmmm…a monopol ?

There are 2 versions of Clos des Lambrays : (1) Domaine des Lambrays and (2) Domaine Taupenot-Merme.

See post #6

CLOS DES LAMBRAYS SURFACE AREA: 8.84 ha AVERAGE PRODUCTION: 295 hl PRINCIPAL PROPRIETORS:

Domaine des Lambrays (8.66 ha)

Domaine Taupenot-Merme (420 square meters)

Les St. Georges… oh, wait a minute…

Clos des Lambrays
Corton (Rouge)

For me these are the best two. I find Echezeaux to be too variable.

A few years ago I would have agreed about Clos des Lambrays, but the price is really going up.

I think the best values in grand cru are (no particular order):

(1) Corton. Often can get great examples from Jadot, Chandon des Briailles, Gaunoux and Bouchard for less than $100. For example, just got 1999 Jadot for $80.
(2) Charmes and Mayozores - all I have to say here is Ray, although I used to be able to also say Truchot.
(3) Chapelle Chambertin - Jadot and Rossignol-Trapet make great examples that can be reasonably priced (for Grand Cru Burgundy).
(4) Echezeaux - the best values here are Mongeard-Mugneret.
(5) Mongeard-Mugneret Grands Echezeaux - vineyard is usually pretty dear. One of the top terroir in Burgundy and theirs can be pretty reasonable.

Clos des Lambrays is not the bargain it once was but still relatively good. I would love to try a Taupenot-Merme one day.

I would add Faiveley’s corton. Last few years the quality has ratcheted up. I would also say Meo’s but recently all their wines seem to have gone up in price. I really like Lamarche’s Echezeaux but with Ech it all depends on the domaine. Same with Clos Vougeot.

Plus the guy who uses a small part of it to grow vegetables. Only in Burgundy!

Chandon de Briailles Corton would be my #1 GC bargain.

It used to be Truchot Clos de la Roche…

Truchot Clos de la Roche is about my favorite wine.

I don’t see how we can have a discussion of appellations on this issue without producers. When one is discussing the QPR of Charmes Chambertin, are we discussing Maison Ilan, Dugat-Py, Claude Dugat, Bachelet. Very different answers.

I was hoping to get a sense with regards to the actual vineyard…regardless of producer.
