In your opinion, which of those small “hills of gold” offers the best bang for the buck?
No that I have much experience with most grand crus, but I must say that Echezeaux is rarely disappointing and I keep seeing more and more offers for both young and somewhat aged examples at under $100.
A few years ago I would have agreed about Clos des Lambrays, but the price is really going up.
I think the best values in grand cru are (no particular order):
(1) Corton. Often can get great examples from Jadot, Chandon des Briailles, Gaunoux and Bouchard for less than $100. For example, just got 1999 Jadot for $80.
(2) Charmes and Mayozores - all I have to say here is Ray, although I used to be able to also say Truchot.
(3) Chapelle Chambertin - Jadot and Rossignol-Trapet make great examples that can be reasonably priced (for Grand Cru Burgundy).
(4) Echezeaux - the best values here are Mongeard-Mugneret.
(5) Mongeard-Mugneret Grands Echezeaux - vineyard is usually pretty dear. One of the top terroir in Burgundy and theirs can be pretty reasonable.
Clos des Lambrays is not the bargain it once was but still relatively good. I would love to try a Taupenot-Merme one day.
I would add Faiveley’s corton. Last few years the quality has ratcheted up. I would also say Meo’s but recently all their wines seem to have gone up in price. I really like Lamarche’s Echezeaux but with Ech it all depends on the domaine. Same with Clos Vougeot.
Truchot Clos de la Roche is about my favorite wine.
I don’t see how we can have a discussion of appellations on this issue without producers. When one is discussing the QPR of Charmes Chambertin, are we discussing Maison Ilan, Dugat-Py, Claude Dugat, Bachelet. Very different answers.
