That’s nuts! Too much tannin to be preferential for them? Something about the color change puts them off? Totally intrigued as to the why of it.
They like 23 Brix Pinot Noir a lot more than 19 Brix Syrah, especially as the Syrah also still carries 7-8 grams of malic until the very last week.
In 2010, a notoriously bad bird vintage, a vineyard with side by side Pinot Noir blocks where one producer went to 1 cluster per shoot and the neighboring block went to 2 clusters per shoot, the birds decimated the block with 1 cluster per shoot and were a minor nuisance in the neighboring block with 2 cluster per shoot. One producer saw .75 tons per acre and the neighbor 2.5 tons per acre. Birds are far from random in their predations.
I have been taking most of these purchases to my kids house to serve when we come over. Obviously I don’t mind if they share some with friends.
Ahh, Syrah’s tendency to hang malic def makes sense. And the affect of CT on malic is def a thing, in a more general sense.
Then again, even when the malics are still high, our robins seem to manage to put one peck in every cluster just to be wholly annoying.
The very last of my BD15 shipments - three cases of Patricia Green Cellars 2021 Pinot Noir (well, along with my Spring 2024-release case of 2024s) arrived safe and sound today. While it will be a while before I pull a cork on any of these bottles, I had tried the 2021 Corrine Vineyard, Wadensvil Block and 2021 Wind Ridge Vineyard prior to placing my BD15 order and both were nothing shy of wonderful. Have not yet experienced either of the 2021 Anderson Family Vineyard or 2021 Corrine Vineyard Anklebreaker Block, but will soon remedy that personal failure.
I’ve also opened a couple of bottles each of JB Neufeld 2021 Yakima Valley Cab and 2021 Two Blondes Vineyard Cab, both of which blew me away. I’ve been back for more from the winery and also from a retailer.
My wine “budget” somehow ended up misplaced at some point. I may seek professional counseling . . . .
Was supposed to receive my Goodfellow case today. UPS said 4-7. I was here. Nonetheless, I got a UPS “sorry we missed you” notice! Not sure if the delivery person rang the bell but I was not more than 15 feet from my front door. And of course very warm here. Irritating.
Well, the birds and I have that much in common.
Are you sure?
This morning’s temperature forecast for today is cooler than last night’s at least.
The 2021 Anderson Family was the 2nd of the three bottlings we did if it (2019, 21, 22). Unique site in the Dundee Hills that is wired to be less overtly fruited and more unusually tannic for the AVA which fits into our wheelhouse. Combo of Pommard, Wadensvil and 667. Really terrific in 2021. The Corrine Anklebreaker is the most site specific Pinot we make. Extremely rugged, savory and dark-fruited. Winery people (all 2 of us, formerly 3) love it but it’s out of a lot of folks’ comfort zone. It’s often times at an apex after being open for 4-5 days.
you’re an excellent Dad!
Oh boy, I better plant Syrah ASAP
My Suzor was supposed to arrive today, and I got a notice from UPS yesterday saying it was delayed because of a train derailment! Now scheduled to arrive tomorrow so hopefully it’s intact!

Hope my wines are not in those boxes
My Goodfellow arrived safely today! Thanks, Marcus!
Drank mine last night and very much agree!
Lol. Not a BD purchase, but it’s the first time I ever sent a shipping
label to have wine shipped (as “olive oil”) from a fellow Berserker and I get this notice from UPS.
Last time I got one of those, it turned out there were broken bottles and they decided to destroy the case. Aged Champagne…
