Every month or so I host a glassware-intense party and with all the contortions, incantations, and expletives required to get the glasses organized in the standard racks I thought why not just use a commercial rack. Has anyone put one in their regular dishwasher (in place of the bottom rack) with success? Am I missing anything blindingly obvious that would make this fail?
I do, it has been one of the best time saving jobs I ever undertook. I bought a stacked unit tall enough to accommodate Zaltos and crossed my fingers that it would fit. It did require a little fettling - I bought some wheels and screwed them to the sides, necessary to hold it off the base of the dishwasher so the āpropellorā underneath could spin. The fit is snug against the door but not so snug that it requires real force to close the door and there is no distortion of the door or loss of seal. Now I just pop dirty glasses and decanters in the rack and wash once it is full, on a 30 minute wash and 15 minute rinse. I havenāt washed a wine glass for about four years (this was a āstuck at home during Covidā project) - before that I was washing them all by hand, every week.

Donāt most better quality dishwashers have models designed for glassware? Iāll bet you could buy a āreplacementā glass rack that is designed to fit.
Does the rack need to be as tall as the glasses? Asked another way, I assume you put the glasses in upside-down, and Iām wondering if I could get a slightly shorter unit where the stems would be exposed a little bit.
Neat job! I just picked up a couple of white wine racks, still need to find a red. What did you use for wheels?
Someone asked about the height - they donāt need to be as tall as the glass for washing, but for stacking racks during storage they do, and since these easily work for storage I went with high enough. The AWS conference stacks glasses about 8 racks high and wheels the stacks around, just like Rent-a-Crate moving boxes do.
Maybe? I want to be able to pull the rack out once done and reinsert the standard rack, and also cool/dry/store the glasses in the same rack. Easier and much less chance of breakage.
I just looked on Boschās website, no special racks period. Not even a glass holder for my recent machine.
Edit: I can wash 4 wine glasses on the top rack. The 3rd rack for utensils has never been used and Iām not sure where. I put it.
The commercial rack idea is great. Only problem: In my NYC apartment, it would pose a storage problem.
On a much smaller scale, Iāve found two ways to increase the number of glasses I can wash.
My GE here in the city had stem holders for only four glasses, but I ordered two more and can wash eight. (There are squat brandy glasses where I could fit two more wine glasses in the photo.)
Iād hoped to do the same thing with the Bosch dishwasher at my weekend house, but after Iād bought the machine, I discovered that it wasnāt possible to attach more holders to the metal frame. So I found these silicone stem holders on Amazon, which have worked just fine to hold additional glasses in place. Theyāre hollow and slip down over the tine of the upper rack.
I went as tall as I could to maximise the protection afforded the glasses. The racks are modular, you just choose how many layers you want to give the desired height. I am sure you could reduced by 1 or 2 layers to created a lower height and it will work fine.
