Anyone know actual law RE: bringing wine to Mexico in checked bag?

Or have experience bringing wine to Mexico via plane? I’ve seen 3L per person allowed duty free and 6L per person allowed duty free in online searches. I’d like to bring 9L (1 case) between 2 adults because that’s the size of my Pelican with wine cutouts (and because we’ll be there for 9 days), but not if they’re going to Google all the bottles and try and charge me 10-20% tax on the most expensive ones…

FWIW we’ll be landing in PVR.

Hey, timely question. Heading to Tulum in a few weeks. Following.

Each airport is different. Three times now I’ve arrived by air into Mérida with a case each time. Told them it was wine. Nobody ever looked and I paid no duty to bring wine in.

One thing about Mexico is everyday, every place, a different story.

Went into Cabo this summer with 7 bottles for two people, was asked if we had booze, told them yes, 7 bottles of wine, and they waved us through no other questions asked.

I have been flying into MX with wine now for over 10 years–roughly 20 trips. I took 8 bottles with me this past December, in one shipper. Checked it, no problem bringing it through the customs into the country. And never experienced any problems (or being asked to pay anything) over decade of time. Why press it…bring 8 bottles and go enjoy yourselves.

Same here, it’s never been any issue.

I’m also in before “you should just drink margaritas / mezcal / cerveza” guy gets into the thread.

That guy is mostly correct. He just left Champagne off his list.

Not Mexico, but funny enough to share here: we brought about 7 bottles consisting of wine, sake and whisky into Singapore last December. We were stopped and sent to customs where a very serious young man with a handheld calculator asked us for details of all the bottles, including price and ABV. Then, after much punching away at the keys, he charged us $16.50 duty, smiled, and sent us on our way.

6 liters of wine per adult allowed into Mexico on checked luggage. Equivalent to 8 750ml bottles.

Last time I went through we took a case over two adults – they asked that we split into seperate boxes (per person) next time but let us go.

I’m that guy and proud of it. I drink Italian wine in Italy, French wine in France, US wine nowhere (except for Hardy’s Mourvedre), tropical drinks (gin and tonic qualifies) in the tropics, MEZCAL in Mexico, and CHAMPANGE everywhere (res ipsa loquitur).

We went to PVR last week, have been through there to go up to Punta de Mita a handful of times. I did the same search as you and found various answers too :). We always take a few bottles in the suitcase and have never had an issue…especially if we get the green light heading out of bag claim…

I’m sure you already thought of this, but don’t entirely discount Mexican wine while you’re there. As long as you don’t exclusively drink aged Barolo, Prem Cru Burgundy, classified Bordeaux, etc., they’re doing interesting things in Mexico. I haven’t had truly great wines but I’ve had a number of very interesting wines in Mexico.

Don’t know the actual law, but have been “told” by airlines both 3L & 6L/person. I’ve brought 12 bottles in approx 10 times (always traveling with wife) and never been asked anything more than what it was. Never had to open it. I used to put a printout in the box listing wines and cost just in case a customs agent opened it and wanted to enforce the 3L/person without duty. I’ve stopped doing that because no one has ever bothered me.

I hope you asked him for a receipt

I’m in Cancun right now and brought six .750s in my checked luggage. Customs asked about them and didn’t care. Same thing last year. I’m told that Mexican Customs are mostly looking for food and cigarettes.

While here I’ll endorse The Wine Check yet again. Honestly, mine looks so travel worn I’m sure they just think I’m hauling plonk.

I have a Pelican. It’s probably overkill, but I already had tons of spare 1650’s, so at that point all I had to do was buy the foam insert for wine. I’ve also thought about trying to be a bit more inconspicuous and just use a shipper box which has the added benefit of not having to fly home with it. Pelican is definitely coming with me to Burgundy in October, though…

Those 1650s might get flagged just because they’re primarily for guns.
