2023 William & Mary Wine Release

Offering is live!

If you haven’t heard by now, 2023 was a vintage for the ages. Long cool summer, buffered by an average+ crop size – the only thing you needed to bring was patience.

As we get further from harvest, the minute day-to-day details give way to broader impressions and a few specific core memories. Some you’d like to forget, like nearly stepping on a rattlesnake while sampling grapes in flip flops, but if you were to ask me when I knew I was in the middle of something great was the first day of fermentation. I opened the bottom valve to get started and the purity and power of the aromatics made me stop in my tracks. When Shifflett Ranch is on, there is nothing in Napa like it.

The Wines

After a brief fling with Pinot earlier in the vintage, we got back home to Napa and specifically the family at Shifflett Ranch. We are back to where everything started and it sure feels good. The best news -yields were strong, allocations are up and in what may ultimately be a better vintage than 2016/2018, the best time to stock up.

2023 William & Mary Wine Company Proprietary Red Wine, Shifflett Ranch
60% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Franc
175 cases produced
14.7% alcohol

$95/btl

I wanted one last look at this wine before I wrote it up, so I took it to a family gathering last night in hopes that I could steal some new words for this venerated staple of the lineup. Cork pulled, left to go watch the kids/cousins/nephews play and when I got back – gone. Empty.

Most years I co-ferment this wine, meaning the biggest decisions are made the minute they are picked and go to tank. This year, crop & tank size lent itself to separately fermenting the Cab Franc and Merlot, not something I usually prefer, but might need to reconsider given the results. Lifted aromatics, white and purple flowers, with a midpalate that glides. Often the Cab Franc can sit a little tall in the midpalate, but the Merlot in 23 was uncommonly powerful and matches perfectly. The tannins are fine and instead of locking down the fruit, they put them on a pedestal and in the spotlight. An absolute joy to drink.

2023 William & Mary Wine Company Cabernet Sauvignon, Shifflett Ranch
100% Cabernet Sauvignon
150 cases produced
14.7% alcohol

$125/btl

‘Is this the best W&M Shifflett Cab you’ve ever made?’

Probably.

2016/2018 are the natural rivals here but 2023 takes the best from both vintages in a way I didn’t think possible. The depth of field and fruit are very reminiscent of the 2018, but even to this day that wine needs air to shake loose the remaining structure. 2016 had Shifflett structure but the abundance of primary red/blue fruit to overcome the tannin and open the drinking window early. This year we got it all – depth, power, fruit and structure in a balance that allows everything to shine without any of the rough edges. If you have liked this one in the past, chances are good you’ll love this one.

Easy buy - 9 cab/3 prop red for me. The library release teaser is what kept it to only 1 case

3 each, these are delicious. :yum:

2 of each for us. Glad to be able to purchase as Will makes great wine and is a real gentleman.

Nice. I usually go in the other direction (more prop than Cab) - don’t see too much Cab Franc in Napa, so cool to have a little variation

Had to grab a 6 pack of the cabs

I have done the same on some vintages as well. But the comparison to the '16 has me leaning more cab this year as I had one recently that was :fire:

These are my last bastion of list spots I hope to keep forever.

6 and 6. Easiest decision all year.

I seem to recall in one of @William_Segui’s emails he hinted at some sort of Library Release possibly coming this year. Not that I’m begging for another release right now as my credit card is on the verge of melting. Anyone here if anything else lately about this?

Dunno but Rivers Marie had a cab library release today.

I tried to buy some but it was 4 bottle minimum. All I could get was 3 bottles in my shopping cart and after trying to keep refreshing I gave up

Yeah I skipped the RM Library release…But I could have sworn Will mentioned this was for his label in particular maybe I misread

There was a post in another thread that i asked Will if he would do similar to RM and do a library and he said that would be interesting but if i recall, he also said he didnt have much of a library. Maybe he will chime in.

I think he’s been swamped with the RM library releases and dealing those issues. I imagine once he’s through that he will focus on his own label so we should know more soon

I tasted the 2024 W&M Cab from barrel today with Will as I was in the area. Full-throttle and very impressive. About a year away.

What are your thoughts on the 2023?

The Library Cab Release was today, the Library Pinot Release was yesterday. Missed both of them and I was all geared up for the Pinot one. Got busy at work and by the time I remembered it was all gone. Was all Rivers Marie.

The PN release was a sh@tshow. The email said three bottle limit, but the ordering system required four. There was an “add all” button that apparently blew up the system; I had my basket filled twice only to have the system time out. To add insult their sold out email implied that some received more than the 3 bottle min/max (864/3 gives you a whole number). End of a long buying relationship.

By the time I remembered to check on it, both for the Cab and Pinot, it was sold out, No harm, saved myself some $$$

You’re ending the relationship because of the outcome of the library release? I hope thats not the reason

I believe they even said in one of the emails it was going to be very challenging and not something they had done before, but were going to do their best to handle demand. We have no idea how many people where on their site all trying to buy the same limited number of bottles. Sure, its frustrating to not get any bottles after multiple attempts, but I wouldnt end my relationship over it if I enjoyed their wines and was comfortable with the price point.
