I am staying at the Eau in Palm Beach now and I was pleasantly surprised to see both Krug 170 and ‘12 DP on the list for $46 BTG, nice healthy pours in white wine glasses. The 170 is drinking really well tonight, not overly lemony or acidic, showing nice toast and creaminess. The DP is reductive and not showing a lot. There is some bittersweet spice, unripe pear and cantaloupe. This does not show nearly as well as the ‘08 did at this stage, but who know where it goes from here. Both my wife and I preferred the Krug. We got a second round just to make sure.
I was waiting for someone to notice but it wasn’t me! I have a bottle of Canyon Road screwcap red wine in the room as a welcome gift, so I don’t need that. I even mentioned to the server that it was a contrast to see it on the tray with the Krug and DP.
So we are having dinner now 50ft from the lounge where we had the Champagne. No DP or Krug BTG, but a bottle of ‘12 DP for $500.
I’m not surprised the ‘12 DP is shutting down; my impression a few months ago was that it was headed in that direction. First bottle just after release was stacked and more open, but still compact, full of potential energy. Thanks for the notes!
I would have said there would forever be a gap between 2002 Dom and 2004 Dom, and maybe there still is. I think 2008 is extraordinary, and while I found 2012 excellent, am not sure it is as good.
I have neither in my cellar, and trying to remedy that to hold for the longer term (at least thats the plan). Would you hold out for ‘08 and spend the extra money, or ‘settle’ for ‘12? I’m sure everyone will have their own perspective. If ‘08 is head and shoulders better then I’ll hold out for ‘08.
Hold out for what purpose? Personally I bought cases and cases of the 08 and feel that it was a good investment, both monetarily and to have them available to drink for the next 20 years. But if I’m buying 1 bottle today to drink, I’m not sure it’s 08.
I would have absolutely no problem drinking a 2008 right now, but I like young champagne, and 15 years old is fine by me. I don’t think it’s “shut down” right now. I’ll note that there are always some concerns that a 2008 is going to be like a 1996, with a question mark about whether the wine is ever as “open for business” as folks want it to become with bottle age. But I think it’s a superior vintage on that front, typically pretty dense wines, and that there is plenty of good fruit on the 2008. The one standout 12 over 08 for me is Winston Churchill. Maybe Lanson too. But I think 08 Dom is “better” than 12 Dom. Both excellent wines.
Some 2013s are also really lovely right now though there is some debate on lot offerings and variation. I’ve enjoyed 2012s. If I’m going to spend some serious money and want to KNOW what I’m going to pop is going to absolutely kick ass and maybe raise some eyebrows with how delicious it is TODAY, like in a blind tasting and I want to bring the winner, I’m probably reaching for a 2009 Cristal. If Dom, a 02, 04, or 08.
I drink a fair amount of Dom, but there are plenty of folks here who drink much more of it and more regularly than I do, so I’m always happy to hear other folks’ opinions on this topic.
I did not load up like i should have when it was cheap, but now looking to add some DP for long term. I was asking basically is 08 worth the extra coin at this point vs 12. Or if i found 12 at good price point should i just pull the trigger on that in lieu of waiting for decent price on 08
Marriott has done a great job of destroying the Ritz Carlton brand. The Eau is really nice. Here is the complete Champagne offering BTG in the lobby lounge.
