There is no point in having this discussion (for the thousandth time) but that won’t prevent it from coming up next month and the month after etc etc etc.
But in all the years I have been dealing with them, they have failed to come through (eventually) on a futures order twice. In both cases, I was offered a deal like this – higher rated, more expensive, harder to get wine to make it good. In the meantime, I have received countless best-anywhere-by-a-mile deals, all delivered in perfect shape. I have had the same “can’t deliver X, how about Y” experience with other retailers that are revered here.
I can certainly understand that there are folks thinking the wait is too long and that this sort of situation is unacceptable. It seems to me perfectly understandable to refuse to deal with them. I find no reason not to, but to each his own.
Hmmm I had good luck with my 02’s, but tattinger Comtes was the only one from your list of producers. I do order quite a bit of NV $30-60 bubbles from them. Apparently my experience does not make a rule, yet I’m still tempted at this offer.
What didn’t you like about it; from what others have posted it’s sounds pretty good. I just picked some up but will sit on it; hope it’s nothing like 03 Dom. Do you like other vintages of Krug?
The current Krug Grande Cuvee is actually based on 2006 though the US market still has quite a bit of 2005 base out there too. I do agree that the 2003 based Grande Cuvee is really, really good, but if you are buying it now, it is stock that just didn’t move through at a normal rate (for whatever reason).
Ah, yes, you are correct, as the MV I’ve purchased recently is the 2006 base, but I would love to find the 2003 base. I tasted the 03 vintage next to the MV with 03 base and the difference was astonishing, giving me huge respect over the blend concept they are so proud of.
I didn’t NOT like the 03, it just seemed obvious to me that it was a hot vintage, and we tasted it blind.
In the spring, I had the latest Grande Cuvee (2006 base), the 2003 based version, and the 1998, 2000, and 2003 vintages side by side. My personal favorite for drinking then and there was the 2003 based Grande Cuvee so I am right with you on that one.
I don’t think the 2003 Krug shows all that much 2003 character. In fact, I once mixed up the 2000 and 2003 blind. It is a riper, less acidic Krug than normal, but it still has plenty of structure IMO.
