2001 Keller Riesling TBA

I’m told this wine will be on my Thanksgiving table courtesy of a guest. I haven’t been able to find much info around, so wondering if any of you smart folks can tell me what to expect.

It’s a Trockenbeerenauslese

Ok, full on viscous syrup? I’ve had a bunch of Krachers at this age and they have been pretty dense.

It’s super sweet riesling. Like 200g/L.

I hope you have pancakes handy.

My pumpkin pie thanks you for the wisdom.

Really no good pairings? Vanilla ice cream? Toasted walnuts or pecans?

I’m not averse to sipping it solo but might be good to try something.

Nope. Just sit back with a glass. Really. I’ve tried more than my fair share of accompaniments to TBA and they just don’t work.

I have a bottle, so please post some notes.

I like to pair TBA with strong bleu cheese. It can also hold up to sweet desserts (like apple pie, creme brulee, etc.) but I think it’s better on its own or with something that provides more contrast (like the cheese).

Should be a bit of a guide. I would not try and pair it with anything.

Agree, sip it by itself in small amounts after the meal. Maybe some nuts if you must have something to eat.

Yup, salted nuts or nothing with it. Sweets with something this sweet get tiring fast and mute the nuance in the wine.

I’m not much of a dessert wine guy, but I love TBA’s and even BA’s. I prefer them and really good Vin Santo to Sauternes, owing to their density and viscosity, I’ve never had a Keller–is this THE Keller?–but it should be a special experience. Enjoy!

Thank you, all. We are chock full of nuts here.

Will “investigate” and report back.

This bottle was gorgeous and wowed our crowd.

I didn’t get a lot on the nose, but the palate was kaleidoscopic. A fresh stone fruit cocktail with peach, nectarine, pear, and candied cherry. You’ve even got the honey syrup and a squeeze of fresh lemon.

It reads to me as in early maturity, even though the color is deep amber. This bottle was bought on release and well-stored, with cork soaked through about a quarter of its length. No rush on these.

I tried it next to a ex-cellar release 97 Baumard QdC from this year’s Benchmark sale and the tba was clearly showing better.

Per WB wisdom, no pairing required.
