001 Vintners Innaugural Release - Graeme MacDonald Winemaker

350?! Ha!

If it does sell, thats how it all starts

Agree will see where it hammers.

If they sell at $350, realistically that’s only slightly better than breaking even when you consider the 20% sellers premium, shipping to get it there, and of course the taxes/shipping on the original purchase.

Other than the MACDONALD and Screagles of the world…it seems pretty tough to make anything ‘flipping’ CA wine these days.

There are too many older releases you can find at auction cheaper than new release for Napa. Doesn’t make sense to buy on release any longer unless the wine is just not available on the secondary market.

Just poured a bottle into the decanter and will probably taste it in about 4 hours. Will report back!

Doesn’t look like any takers at $350 and it’s back up this week.

When I initially tasted this after 4 - 6 hours of double decanting, it was very good but not quite impressive – seemingly holding back a bit and just a little stern. On the following day, the wine didnt completely transform, but it all came together much more with deeper flavors and more inviting tannins. Defintely a great showing on day 2.

Notes of cigar box, blackberry, graphite/ freshly shaved pencil, tobacco, clove and maybe just a hint of bell pepper (or maybe that last one was me being hopeful). A lot of concentration and structure. Tannins are high quality and relatively fine, even if there are a lot of them.

This certainly isn’t a flamboyant, very modern styled Napa wine. It comes off as a bit more serious. This reminds me of a Left Bank Bordeaux with a just a bit of that Napa polish/refinement and maybe just a touch more ripeness (but nowhere remotely near overripe for me).

Like everyone else, I recommend holding. If you really want to taste it soon, save some for the following day.

Thanks for the write-up. I don’t plan on opening one for a few years, so I will need to make new vintage purchasing decisions based on what I learn from others. I liked reading it isn’t a flamboyant wine.

Thanks,

I’m debating on opening one of these up soon-ish but may decide against it. Hopefully there are a few others who are braver.

A friend opened a bottle of the 2019 001 tonight. Incredibly primary, showing lots of oak, lots of black fruit, and good tannic structure. Opened a bit over the hour we drank it. Reminds me a lot of a 2010 Abreu Thorevilos that we drank last year.

Wow that’s insane praise as Abreu Thore is a top Napa wine.

"Thank you for signing up for the double o one mailing list. We are grateful for the groundswell of interest and are thrilled to be sharing our wines with the world. While our inaugural 2019 vintage sold out this past Spring, we are excited for the forthcoming release of our next bottling. You will receive details about this offer next month.

In the meantime, please let me know if your travels bring you to Napa Valley as I would enjoy meeting you and sharing some of our wines. While we don’t have a tasting space, I am happy to grab a bottle and meet collectors out at a local restaurant for lunch."

Sincerely,

Jack Bittner

Hmmm I had assumed there would be no 2020… larger quantities with some To-Kalon fruit

We are pleased to announce the release of the 001 Vintners 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley on Tuesday, September 17 at approximately 9:00 am PT. Please save the date.

The 2020 vintage offered us a unique opportunity. In addition to being delighted with the quality of the fruit from our home Ecotone Vineyard, we are grateful to have also harvested some Cabernet Sauvignon from a vineyard within the historic To-Kalon. This one-time blend combines two of the more notable vineyards in Napa Valley.

Winemaker Graeme MacDonald’s blend for the 2020 vintage of 001 is 88.9% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11.1% Cabernet Franc. Graeme describes the wine as “inky, fresh dark cherry evolving into layers of bitter chocolate, pencil lead, black olive and forest floor. A beautifully sculpted wine expressing purity, concentration and a sense of restraint. The 30+ year old vines add depth and concentration across the palate with a core of noble tannins unwinding into a mouthwatering finish. A nod to the classic wines of the Napa Valley.” 525 cases produced.

Kind of surprised also…anyone tried this?

I wonder where that “Cabernet Sauvignon from a vineyard within the historic To-Kalon” could possibly have come from…

Haven’t tried it (and, for the record, have no inside information), but having tasted the 2019 I’ll be a buyer.

Haven’t’ gotten my 2019s yet but will be looking forward to this release.

Yeah, I thought this offer was going to be the 2021.

With this being a new premium brand, I hope/assume they wouldn’t push their luck with potentially tainted grapes on their second release, but I can’t see how it would be anything more than a leap of faith, since people won’t have tasted it and posted notes before we have to order.

One other interesting data point – I didn’t order the first one (split an allocation with another WBer), but I still got an offer email this time.

I was surprised as well and definitely missed that above comment.

Edit - Was really expecting the 21’s and we’ll see if they let new members skip this release and have access to the 21’s next year.
