Your top 5 varietals - consumption

A variant on the other thread - what is the varietal break down of what you drink?

My data is from 2009 and from two different means of looking at it - TNs written (might not be my bottle) and consumption from my cellar.

TN % Drank from my cellar

Pinot Noir 13.8% 15%
Chardonnay 8.5% 6.7%
Red Bdx 7.3% 8.5%
Riesling 7.1% 5.3%
Red Blend 6.0% 6.0%
White Blend 5.3% 5.7%
Cab Sauv 4.7% 3.7%
Syrah 2.7% 4.4%

The most interesting thing I see is that I drink Chard from my cellar and out (writing a TN) more than I cellar it anymore. Makes sense with premox - when I dine out at a restaurant with good white Burgs, I am very likely to order them knowing that I can send back a bad bottle. Less risk than cellaring. The other amusing thing is that I write notes on about 1/2 of the Syrah I drink (less considering I went to a Syrah offline and wrote maybe two notes) which makes sense since I find most Syrah to be boring.

Mine is similar to the other list, except that I drink more Riesling, Syrah and Pinot (in particular) than I am cellaring. This makes sense. I tend to get and drink new-world Pinot (Loring) and cellar it for less time than my old-world wines. And I like to crank through young Riesling even though I am cellaring a lot too.

Interestingly my consumption reports don;t show percentage like the in-stock, something I just noticed last night since I am in the middle of recoding all of this stuff. And it would be nice to have a more copy/paste friendly way to spit this onto a BB without the more sensitive details (costs, values, totals). Hmm, more features for the list…

I manually calculated. Don’t think it is a big feature need though it is an interesting mental exercise.

Mine would be different than the other poll, and one of the primary reasons is that I don’t bother “inventorying” most whites, so they never show in my CT numbers. But we drink a lot of chablis & muscadet on a day-to-day basis, and also drink a lot of Sancerre in the summertime. In terms of reds, Bordeaux, nebbiolo & sangiovese - not sure what varietal would come in fourth.

I understand. But since the “patient is on the table” and I am in the middle of (re)coding/(re)organizing all of this stuff, the new site now has percentages. 'Twas one line of code. Same for purchases. The % is probably the most useful thing in the report to be honest, and it was a mere oversight that I didn’t add it years ago.

I just think it is funny that I have spent all weekend bending my brain around this code while these threads are burning away.

Bravo on the avatar, Andrew!!!

The last year Ive been drinking most Riesling and Muscadet.

Champagne - 30%
Pinot Noir - 18%
Cabernet Sauvignon - 17%
Syrah - 11%
Rhone Blends - 11%

Next up is Zin…

  1. Pinot
  2. Pinot
  3. Syrah
  4. Pinot
  5. Cab

Top two are:

  1. 39% Red Rhone blends
  2. 37% Pinot noir

Interesting question, Andrew. Never thought to look.

Pinot Noir
Syrah
Cabernet Sauvignon
Red Bordeaux Blend
Red Rhone Blend

for my entire CellarTracker use (coming up on 2 years):

Red Rhone Blend
Syrah
Zin
White Blend
Cabernet Sauvignon

for '09

Red Rhone Blend
Syrah
Zin
Grenache Blend
Champagne Blend

For 2009

Pinot Noir 19.7%
Red Bdx Blend 12.2%
Cab Sauv 8.8%
Syrah 8.5%
Chardonnay 5.8%
Red Rhone Blend 5.8%

Pinot Noir 39.5%
Cab 15.3%
Syrah/Shiraz 15.3%
Tempranillo 9.5%

Don’t know exact numbers but I’d estimate

45% Pinot - Red Burgs
40% Champagne
5% Syrah/Blends - Northern Rhones
4% Bordeaux mainly Merlot based
3% Nebbiolo

Cabernet
Meritage/BDX
Zinfandel
Syrah
Sauvignon Blanc

This is an unscientific breakdown:

Whites:

  1. Riesling
  2. Gruner Veltliner
  3. Chardonnay

Red:

  1. Grenache from various countries
  2. Cabernet Sauvignon
  3. Gamay (I like Beaujolais a lot)
  4. Pinot Noir
  5. Syrah

Welcome, John!

Thanks!
