Your Coffee Arsenal? (Maker, grinder, etc)

There are sales a time or two each year that puts them in the low-mid $200s which isn’t a huge amount more than other SCAA approved drip machines. From a practical standpoint it’s nice to have parts and support available a long time after the purchase.

Nothing wrong with that machine. A friendly reminder though, that money spent on a better grinder and better beans will get you the most quality. No machine functionality can fix a bad grind or make bad beans taste any less bad.

What is wrong with your previous coffee machine that is making you want a new one?

Have an old Cuisinart coffee maker that is fine but the heater is kind of going. Not as hot as I’d like. I don’t mind spending $300 (instead of $80) for something I literally use every day, but has to be worth it.

Ah i see. If the water is still getting to at least 90 degrees Celsius it should be okay to brew darker roasts.

Not sure what your current grinder situation is or if you buy pre ground, but splitting that $300 in half to get a grinder and a new machine would probably get you the best results. As always the Baratza Encore is the default QPR grinder.

I’m not up to date on the market for drip brewer machines but I’m sure there are many in the $150 range that will do the job just fine.

I have a nice burr grinder and buy locally roasted, fresh beans. My only compromise right now is that I grind the beans and load them and the water into my coffee maker and set the timer the night before. I value the coffee being ready when I come into the kitchen.

It sounds like the moccamaster would be a totally justified purchase. About $1 a day over the course of a year and that thing is paid for. $1 a morning for great coffee? and after a year its free? no brainer investment!

So different! I would feel I’d been cheated if I didn’t go through the ritual of making the coffee, and have it end with a cup in front of me. I go through an identical dance in the kitchen every morning, and love every step. Also, since I like my coffee extremely fresh, if I slept in even a little bit, or got distracted on the way from bed to kitchen, with a timer, it would have been sitting, Yuck.

Actually, it’s my wife’s call. She almost always gets up earlier than me, so she would bear the burden. But after the glowing recommendations from this thread, maybe I’ll try again.

Other than color, you will need to decide if you want a thermal carafe or glass carafe. The thermal carafe cannot be run in the dishwasher and I value that greatly, plus we tend to drink coffee at the same time here. I can see other good use cases for the thermal carafe though.

Why run your coffee carafe through the dishwasher? Are you using it for things other than coffee?

I clean our thermal carafe with Clearly Coffee from Urnex. There’s build up of stains.

Having used glass and thermal carafes I would never choose glass again. The coffee is so much better at staying warm and fresh in a thermal carafe. Glass ones often have those awful heated plates which just destroy a fine cup.

I just rinse and shake the carafe with hot water after each use. Then every month or so I just fill it with hot water and some dishwasher detergent. After sitting for 20 mins and some shaking the interior looks brand new. The lining is glass on mine but have used the same process in stainless interior thermal carafe.

100% on all of this.

To each his own. I find that the dishwasher cleans glass far more thoroughly than I can hand wash a thermal carafe. Coffee oils are very persistent. Furthermore, the coffee here is always consumed within seconds of the drip completing. And i find some degradation after time in a thermal carafe. Probably all related somehow to why I can’t stand Coravin or any other wine preservation methods and use fragrance free dishwashing soap.

But if your usage involves you or your wife preparing coffee an hour before the other person drinks it, the thermal carafe certainly makes sense.

There’s also an Aeropress or “air press” one. It was known he was somewhat a coffee guy as I recall one of the earlier leaked pictures showed a coffee setup.
