Hello, and welcome to SER’s Vindependence Day!
This past January was my 6th BerserkerDay, offering my unique, distinctive varieties. It was my best BD yet, so I’m running it back!
SER is My Passion Project
My wine career began in the late 1990s in Michigan. In 2001, I moved to Santa Cruz, and worked with Randall Grahm at Bonny Doon Vineyard for over 20 years. I am currently the Director of Winemaking for a wine company with several brands. These experiences are a source of inspiration for my own label, Ser, my passion project. Over the years, I have developed a love for working with lesser known varieties and old vine vineyards. I started Ser in 2012 with the intention of producing varietal, vineyard designate wines from special sites. I produce these wines with minimal intervention, little to no additions, all with the intention of the wine developing its true expression of origin, the literal definition of Ser.

If you’ve made it this far… The Wines
Nebbiolo
If I had to pick a favorite variety… it has got to be Nebbiolo. However, it is difficult (and expensive) to source in California. After years of searching, I finally scored some! My Ser 2022 Nebbiolo comes from the Santa Cruz Mountains. It is by far the closest I have come to the Italian wines I adore.
SER Nebbiolo (100% Nebbiolo) sourced from Lago Lomita Vineyard in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The day I went to visit this vineyard, I knew right away this was special. The vineyard was meticulously managed. I noticed right away the vines were balanced, carrying a modest crop and on a ridgetop at 2600 ft., that special mountain viticulture creates the perfect conditions for Nebbiolo. The wine spent almost two years in neutral barrels before bottling. The wine is deeply structured but enough fruit to balance the high acid and tannin. 60 cases, 14.5% abv.
Cabernet Pfeffer - (100% Cabernet Pfeffer) I started working with Cabernet Pfeffer in 2012 when most people, including the grower, believed the variety to be a hybrid of Cabernet Sauvignon and Trousseau. Back in 2014 we did some DNA testing to find that it is in fact its own variety with no relation to Cabernet Sauvignon. It is a rare grape called Mourtaou (the synonym for Pfeffer in France). There are only about 12 acres planted in California, located primarily in San Benito County. Both of the vineyards represented in the offerings this year were sourced from Ancient Vines. The Wirz Cabernet Pfeffer is now 100 years old, and the Gimelli is over 130 years old. 80 cases, 14 % abv.
Aromas of cranberry, red currant, pomegranate, and white peppercorn. Juicy red fruit and spice on the palate. Earthy, mineral finish with delicate yet structured tannins. Pairs very well with a variety of dishes, but particularly lamb.
Trousseau Gris
SER Trousseau Gris (100% Trousseau Gris) sourced from the Siletto Vineyard in San Benito County. Provenant of the Jura, once known as “gray riesling.” Whole cluster pressed, racked to neutral puncheon. Aromas of tropical and stone fruit, most notably white cherry and nectarine. On the palate, quite rich with a long finish. 63 cases, 12.5 % abv.
Vermentino
SER Vermentino (100% Vermentino) sourced from the Cedar Lane Vineyard in Arroyo Seco. Crisp, mineral, marine character. Direct to press, stainless steel, cool fermentation. 64 cases, 13 % abv.
Gruner Veltliner
SER Gruner Veltliner (100% Gruner Veltliner - both Sparkling and still version) sourced from the Mesa Del Rio Vineyard located in the northern Salinas Valley in the foothills of the Santa Lucia Highlands. Cool and windy climate, the wine is layered and aromatic. Destemmed and pressed to stainless steel tank. Cool fermentation and no malolactic fermentation. The Sparkling is made in the traditional Champagne method and spent ~18 months en tirage. 105 cases, 12 % abv.
Cinsault
SER Cinsault (100% Cinsault) sourced from the Bechtold Vineyard, the 138 year old, allegedly the oldest Cinsault vineyard in the world and possibly the oldest vineyard in California. Dry farmed, head trained, organically farmed. 2023 was an exceptional year for this vineyard. The wine is floral, perfumed and light bodied. Gorgeous ruby color with juicy strawberry, raspberry, and cherry flavors. 54 cases, 12.9% abv.
Pinot Noir
SER Pinot Noir (100% Pinot Noir) sourced from the very coastal (about a mile from the ocean) Rio del Mar vineyard in Aptos, CA within Santa Cruz County. I source a mix of clones including the La Tache clone that provides beautiful complex herbal notes combined with cherry, plum, and spice. Fine tannins, balanced acidity and a lingering finish. 120 cases, 13.5% abv.
Mourvèdre
SER Mourvèdre (100% Mourvèdre) sourced from 76% Zaca Mesa 24% Santa Ynez Vineyards in the Santa Ynez Valley. Perfumed violets, spiced red fruit, raspberries, savory and roasty, elegant texture, balanced acidity and medium body. 125 cases, 14.7 % abv.
Riesling
SER Sparkling Riesling (100% Riesling) sourced from the Wirz vineyard in Cienega Valley was the first Ser wine I made back in 2012. The old vines (~64 yrs old) are head trained, dry farmed and organically grown on decomposed granite and limestone soil. The Sparkling Riesling is made using the traditional, champenoise method. En tirage for ~16 months with the slightest dosage for balance.
2022 Nebbiolo (Santa Cruz Mountains)
If I had to pick a favorite variety… it is Nebbiolo. However, this has been one of the more difficult varieties to source in California. I was most proud of the Nebbiolo I produced back in 2007 for Bonny Doon when I was able to manage the vineyard. The Ser 2022 Nebbiolo from the Santa Cruz Mountains is by far the closest I have come to the Italian wines I adore.
