WsOTY -- 2024 Edition and your Discovery of the Year--TABULATIONS COMPLETE

Nice, I have some of those bubbles on deck for later in the year!

Wish I had either! Ha.

Yeah, at some point I want to do a 88 Krug and Krug Collection side by side; should be interesting.

Thanks for the offer, Shan,

I’ll very much keep it in mind.

And what’s more, the vines that made it would only have been around 30 years old, as the first parcels were planted in 1815…

Well, I hope that we all live to see how the 2019 Montrose get to be that age.

I will probably add more to this list as I look up what I had this year, but some of my favorites have been

2002 Truchot MSD Clos Sorbes
2009 Mugneret-Gibourg Nuits St. Georges Chaignots
2007 Chandon de Briailles Corton-Bressandes
1997 Domaine des Baumard Quarts de Chaume
2001 Denis Bachelet Gevrey-Chambertin Les Corbeaux Vieilles Vignes
2007 and 2009 Dom Ruinart Blanc de Blancs
2014 Ramonet Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeot
1964 Marcarini Barolo Brunate
1998 G. Mascarello Barolo Monprivato
1967 Cappellano Barolo [WOTY]
1974 Produttori Barbaresco
2001 Giacosa Barbaresco Falleto
2002 Domaine Huet Vouvray Demi-Sec Clos du Bourg
2005 and 2016 Brane Cantenac

Discovery of the year - Alfert and Julian Bordeauxs. Had a wonderful time for two days in Bordeaux tasting wines from places like D’Issan, Ferriere, Durfort Vivens and Lafon Rochet. These wines and the Panos Brane Cantenac tasting I went to rekindled some interest in Bordeaux that had waned for a number of years.

Also, have not had a Tokaji in many years under we had lunch at Maison D’Estournal when we were in Bordeaux. Had a 2010 Tokaj-Hétszölö 5 puttanos that was really good. The winery apparently is owned by the people that own Cos D’Estournal. Tokaj-Hétszölö, a Hungarian legend

Love that your list includes burgundy of various ages and price points. Aligns with my experience, especially when tasting blind.

Curious how much air you gave the ‘16 MACDONALD?

discovery of the year is without a doubt the brilliant chardos of jessica litaud!

best recollection is double decanted approximately 24 hours in advance to remove sediment and 4-plus hour decant before drinking, suggest you check in with Alex on his current recommendations before you consume, he was very helpful and responsive for me

Thanks, Mark. I was mainly just curious m. I only have one ‘16 and will probably wait on it another couple years. Want to be sure to catch it when it’s showing well, as I plan to open it with my dad. He and I visited Alex together a couple years ago and had a great time.

2024 has been a year of value plays, keeping my avg bottle cost <$30. Paul C would be proud  I’m not including anything that didn’t come from my cellar, like all the killer juice available at our too-infrequent offlines.

My top two wines thus far are products of none other than our own Larry Schaffer:

2015 Tercero Syrah White Hawk Vineyard
2014 Tercero Mourvèdre Larner Vineyard
I rated both of these 95

Filling out my top 9, all rated 94 pts:
2005 Château Rieussec
2018 Sandler Wine Company Syrah Nolan Vineyard
2022 Brian David Chardonnay
2019 de Négoce Cabernet Sauvignon OG N.200
2015 Goodfellow Family Cellars Pinot Noir Heritage No. 5
2013 Jean-Marie Massonnot Champagne Brut Millésimé

2019 Domaine de L’Idylle Mondeuse Vin de Savoie l’Identite d’un Terroir

That Mondeuse was definitely my discovery of the year… great stuff.

1915 Bourdy Rouge

Pulsard planted in what today is Ch. Chalin, where (the Internet tells me) red grapes have been prohibited from being grown for 80 years

@Mike_Grammer - I am going to wait until next Sunday to toss out a list.

Wow and that was still alive?

Very much so!

So fragrant - red fruits, warm red brick, honey like flowers - with a palate reflective of those notes, as well as some blood orange building off of lively acidity.

That’s amazing. Stoked for you. Will have a look and see if I can find some —

Confirming that the 1715 Terrantez Madeira is definitely the DOTY this year
