I am planning to be in the Seattle area for Thanksgiving and would like visit 2-3 wineries the day after Thanksgiving in the Woodinville area. Looking for recommendations on small/limited production hard to find wineries to visit (open to any/all varietals). Any recommendations would be appreciated.
For me, if you’re a first timer: these are all around the Hollywood Hills area:
Delille Cellars
Lauren Ashton
Mark Ryan (or Gorman. Same style)
Trust Cellars
It’s a pretty good range of WA styles…
If you go to the warehouse district, more options open up but that requires driving 10 mins or so.
Get a bite of pizza at the Station Pizza or Commons for lunch.
i recommend the hollywood hills area if u want a more polished experience…
there’s a lot more food choices… easy to walk around… you see more traffic going in and out too etc…
warehouse district is like… well a warehouse… If there, i like:
Sparkman (which is also at Hollywood hills area btw).
Baer
Efeste
If they’re open I really enjoy Stevens Winery in the warehouse district. In that neck of the woods you’ll also find Efeste, Kaella (Berserker Dave Butner’s winery), Avennia and Savage Grace. You might call ahead and verify that some will be open the day after Thanksgiving. Seems like a no brainer but I’ve also seen stranger things around the holidays where some take long weekends.
Efeste and then I would contact Avennia, Betz and Force Majeure to ask for appointments. The last 3 are not open to the public but I do know of people who been able to visit nonetheless. Todd Alexander (most recently of Bryant) is now the Force Majeure winemaker.
In the Warehouse area, I recommend Pomum. Javier isn’t there all the time but will always show up if asked. I second Long Shadows and Delille in the Hollywood area. I also highly recommend Januik as a nice winery and fun place with good pizzas.
Plus another thumbs up for JM Cellars. And toss in Ross Andrews and then Long Shadows tasting room. At Long Shadows they are also pouring Den Hoed wine which is a draw for me.
Trust has good style - their wines taste ernest and well crafted. The whites taste best at fridge temp, with crisp fruit. The reds are polite and show fine craftsmanship.
In the Warehouse District I reccomend Robert Ramsay, WT Vintners, and Savage Grace to best fit your initial criteria. Slightly larger but well worth visiting are wineries like Efeste, Sparkman, etc.
Dave Butner and his Kaella winery mentioned above is sort of half way between the main Warehouse District and Hollywood Hills. None of them are very far apart so there is no real reason to limit yourself to one area or the other if there are wineries you want to try in each area.
In general, you’re going to find the places in the Hollywood area are larger sized WA wineries who produce in Eastern WA and opened satellite tasting rooms in Woodinville. You’re most likely going to have tasting room staff pouring for you on your visit.
The Warehouse wineries are a bit different, and for the most part they are smaller, mom and pop operations, and the facilities are usually both wine production area in the rear, with tasting room in the front. Here, you’re more than likely going to have the winemaker, or family member pouring for you.
Woodinville Wine Country has a very good web site with winery listings and links, maps and event information…http://woodinvillewinecountry.com
Of course, I’d be happy to have you visit Kaella while you are here. We are only open Saturdays, 12-5pm. No reservation required - just pop in - mention you are from Wineberserkers and we will waive the tasting fees for you and your group, so there you go, little to lose!
Let me know if I can be of any assistance and Cheers!
