I haven’t bought any Napa wines from the 2020 vintage due to potential problems with smoke taint, but this one is intriguing…anyone have any experience with this wine? The regular 1881 Napa Cab gets some decent reviews on CellarTracker, but there are no tasting notes or scores for the Oakville Cab…
First time seeing this wine as well, but I think there’s a reason an Oakville Cab is only $29. And it’s even cheaper on Vivino right now ($28). May not have smoke taint, but may not be good either…
It’s a 2020, Boisset is the producer. I wouldn’t buy more than a bottle without firsthand experience, or a reliable source of info.
Hey guys, if you are still holding the 2018 Moundsman, I am not saying “drink up”, but I am saying, don’t cellar for long. opened a bottle a couple nights ago, didn’t finish, recorked. two days later it is undrinkable. Opened a fresh bottle to taste side-by-side, and they are night-and-day. This wine doesn’t have what it takes to go long, drink up.
Anybody going for a mystery case today? They don’t seem to have a discount any greater than most WS wine and I don’t have the space. The one temptation is I might score a wine much higher in cost than my usual $65 per bottle budget limit. For those of you who’ve bought in the past, was it worth it? Any remarkable wines included?
I’ve bought a lot from WS and love it, but have never bought a mystery case from them and don’t think that I will be today. Also, have not seen them offered much at all from them.
I’ve been a Wine Spies customer since the lock downs shut my 2 favorite wine stores in town. Do you remember when they used to offer one mystery wine per case for $20? I bought a lot of those but eventually stopped when I realized that there were just too many wines I didn’t really want that much or already had. I did score an Italian red worth $140 or so making it worthwhile and fun, (like gambling, but I couldn’t lose)… I’ve bought mystery cases from other sites and many times they had 1 valuable wine but the rest was just good, - nothing to get excited about.
If they thought they would sell more cases by listing the contents they would.
They are playing with your emotions.
Buy 6 bottles you have an idea you will like instead of 12 that is a dice roll.
Sure do, it was called “The Vault.” And I enjoyed it! $20, you get a wine worth a minimum of $20 and a decent chance at an upgrade. The best that I got was a $80, but I’ll take it!
These mystery cases just seem meh. They sold out at $299, but not at $499 and $699 yet! Goes to show you that people are just not willing to take THAT much of a chance!
They mentioned Julien Fayard with this most recent case, and I automatically think of a $40 forever discounted Beau Vigne. No thanks!
I did recently break my vow of no more mystery wines by buying the Harbison Vineyard cab offered by Whine Slosh. WB members soon figured out what it was but I think I’ll be happy with it.
The $699 cases just sold out so they put the $499 back up. I’m wondering if the high priced auction pinot that was selling awhile back was the lure. I was thinking high rollers will go for the top case in the hope of getting a $400 or so wine while the cheapest cases are affordable to all with the chance of getting a $100 wine. The mid-range cases may just not appeal as much because its a compromise and no one likes to compromise.
This one looks interesting…anyone have any experience with this wine?
I’ve not had the '18 but have had both the '14 and '16 of B.Wise’s Napa CS bottling… both excellent. I esp enjoyed the '14… the nose was lingering and memorable. I’m tempted by this offer as well.
I clicked an old link on this thread and was kind of surprised to see Schrader’s Pinot up for $75.
Tough times in wine and corporate ownership can do that I suppose.
Yeah, I think that I have seen this wine reduced to $95 before, but never $75.
I ordered the B. Wise and just got an email saying the winery cancelled the sale so WS is substituting a $150 Clos Pegase for $49. I’ve never heard of B. Wise - glad to get the Clos Pegase.
I got the email too. In my 4 years of shopping at WS, I’ve never seen this happen, so all good. Stuff happens. Screw B Wise, I’ll gladly take the substitution.
Interesting…did they give you the option to cancel the order?
Yes, cancel and refund.
I emailed them asking why B. Wise cancelled and here’s their response:
we bought it from a supplier who did not tell them that they were selling it to us. Apparently they didn’t want it to be online and shut down the deal after they heard about it.
It would seem to me that once WS had done the flash sale, the damage was done and it would be pointless for them to torpedo the deal. Now that wine sales are tanking, B. Wise may have burned some bridges with companies that they may need in the future to unload their wine.
