WineSpies.com (Wine Spies) Deal Discussion thread

Wine Spies advertising Luca Maroni’s scores, which means they are taking him seriously. #1 reason I stopped using WineTxt. I think I’ll have to leave Wine Spies as well… sad.

Wine txt?

Spinoff of Wine Library

I wouldn’t drop Wine Spies for using “100-point Luca” in their sales pitch. There’s at least one other critic I don’t take seriously and he gets used everywhere.

Every wine critic has some people that disagree with them but LM is the worst because he gives absurdly high 94 - 98 scores to so very many wines, including cheap low end - like Cracker Jack prizes.

I think with Wine Spies you have to trust the WS taster’s opinions as much as the critic scores.

It’s a matter of principle. You can be a bad critic, that’s not a crime, then I can follow you or not.

But LM sells score certificates to wineries so that they can use them in advertising. Wineries are more likely to pay for high score certificates… so there is a clear incentive to score high for LM.

So you see where my main issue with LM is.

Intereting offer this morning…Anyone have any experience with Wightman Chardonnay?

Tomorrow:

anyone here tried Russell’s Adversity and how it might compare to namesake Bevan Cellars?

Today’s mystery Pritchard Hill Cabernet, based on my 5 minutes of sleuthing, I’m going to say Encosta, by Gandona Estate.

Also agreed, based on simple searching. Probably a worthy 50$ bottle, but not something Im chasing.

While I love a good mystery, I too am passing. FWIW, you can get the 2017 version of this wine on Wine Slash for $55.

You’re likely right, it also matches what WS says they found as low price @WL 99$ 2018 Gandona Encosta Cabernet Sauvignon | Wine Library

I’ll get a bottle, we’ll find out.

Beware of the 2017 Nap Wines.

Unfortunately not my style of cab, with multiple mentions of “sappy”

Still a deal, but I’m not really a fan when discount sites fudge on the real world pricing though….

They are definitely optimistic sometimes, but check capitol cellars it is also a “discounted” price retailer, but you pay shipment.

I don’t think I saw free shipping

Beringer 2017 ‘Private Reserve’ Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon for $50 with Code “1BPR” at checkout.

The code is for Buy One Get One for $1, so brings you to $100 for two bottles or $50 per.

I should also note, this promotion is only good for one use per person on two bottles and for New Operatives only.
