WineSpies.com (Wine Spies) Deal Discussion thread

I’m searching for the source of today’s mystery beckstoffer george lll vineyard cab wine. Checked out Sojurn, which WS has featured before. The price is right but only 94 pt scores. Then found that Copper Bear '22 BGlll cab description has the 97 review and the exact review phrases WS used. No price on the website though. I’m in for 1.

Read through it once, my very first reaction is Faustini Secret Veil. They sold the 2014 version of this wine 6 months ago, also a mystery offering.

But you might be right! Also, see the WS code name? Ursa Major? Interesting that the Copper Bear winemaker is also the winemaker for “Beckstoffer Vineyards.” I didn’t know that they made wine!! I wonder if it is for family only, but that is how he gets access to the best blocks!

That’s it. And both the producer listing and WS say only 50 cases produced. It’s also for sale on both Acme and Falling Bright for $175.

I’d never heard of Copper Bear before but the BGlll vineyard, steep discount and the 97 score sold me.

In for 2 if I had more space maybe more, but I don’t.

sold out befor i could grab any

I’ve been a WS customer for 5 years and this is one of the fastest sell-outs I’ve seen. Not a surprise. The other mystery wines they’ve had for BGlll or similar SVs were $100+ so I never bought them. This time it was within my budget.

Check your email and the WS site later this morning. They usually anticipate fast sellouts and will have another good to great deal later on.

Yeah, another one was just listed. To Kalon Cab.

World’s End Good Times Bad Times, perhaps?

That was my first thought and I don’t think there’s any doubt.

I have a few of the 2015 and opened the first a couple of years ago. It’s fine, but even at $55, I’m not sure I’ll bite. That said I do need a three pack to round out a locker for shipping in the fall, but I think I’d rather wait for the '16 Arns that’s supposed to be coming.

Everything matches; only 93 from Decanter though. I didn’t want to lose out so bought 1 before reading your post. It will probably sell out before noon though.

Not so sure boys, this says 100% Cab! The 5% PV could be an error and World’s End feels like a good natural fit otherwise. It’s seems like all of their wines get discounted. Vivino has the 2020 vintage of this wine on sale for $50 right now.

It looks like someones percentages are off because the exact wording of a review in the WS description is here:

I notice that wine sites will have a reviewers description of an advertised wine without the score. My impression is that it’s because the score is low for a high retail price. They think the modest score will scare off customers for higher priced wines. For me I need to see a 94 or higher to bite on a wine that sells at the winery for $65 and up. When it sells for $125 or more 95/96+ are in order. Just my personal guide. I once created a list of wine scores, each with a minimum price that I considered worth paying.

Jesse Giacomelli is the winemaker. He used to be the winemaker at Zialena (Geyserville). Friends of mine live down the road from Zialena, know him well, and speak highly of Jesse.

Anyway… I want to say Copper Bear is ok so there isn’t a mad rush and his wines remain a “secret”… Lol. But that’s not fair.

My understanding is that his day job is working for Beckstoffer vineyards and then Copper Bear is a separate side project that he sources grapes for from Beckstoffer (and a few others according to his latest fall release.).
Small production. Family operated. Delicious.
IMO, the kind of project and person that deserves support.

Disclaimer… I have both the 2022 BGIII and Rutherford bottles. Will be buying new bottles as part of the fall release.

Any thoughts on the 2020 Catastrophe?

I was very tempted but a little out of my price range. Also blew my budget out on the Last Bottle marathon buying Spring Mountain Vineyard for 88% off and 2 bottles of Keenan at 2/3 off or so

I haven’t had Catastrophe, but have had some of the other bottling, and they were pretty good. This has pretty good reviews on CT, so for the price I bought 6. Had a10% off coupon as well.
