Wines you like vs wines your family/friends like

This weekend I realized my “cellar” has more “sharing wines” than “personal wines.” What are the wines (varietal, style, region, etc.) that you personally like, but your family/friends don’t?

For example, my family loves Cabernet but aren’t fans of the Pinot/Bojo I would choose for myself.

Thoughts?

Most of the wine I purchase is with the intent of drinking with friends and family. The key, and hard part, is finding wines that both you and your friend and family enjoy. I like a wide variety of wines so it works out well for me on that end.

Mostly the wines I buy less of because there’s less demand for them fall into mostly three categories:

  1. Dry Rieslings. My family isn’t a huge fan of bone dry, acid driven whites, so I don’t open as many of those with them and instead open feinherbs and spatleses. I still buy dry Rieslings, though not as much as I’d probably prefer.
  2. Aged or oxidative whites
  3. Nebbiolo

Dessert wines, Sauternes that sort of thing. (I love, but My wife does not like sweet wines, but loves port, go figure). My current project is food match for Chambers Ruthergken Muscat, starting with grilled pineapple and butterscotch ice cream. )

I think the converse question is also interesting, and was touched on in another thread. Wines you have for the benefit of others but aren’t wild about yourself. I’m embarrassed to say I have very few in that category. Mostly ‘high octane’ Cab.

I’m the one with the wine so my family drinks what I like.

In general I enjoy a wide variety of wines and share a large overlap with my wife, with the exception of Grenache.
I really enjoy Grenache dominant blends, but if a Syrah has more than 10% Grenache my wife wrinkles her nose and asks why I’m pouring her that “grape I don’t like?” It’s not my favorite wine, but i like them and don’t have anyone to drink them with me!

I love this because it is a constant battle with my wife. There isn’t a bottle in my cellar that I wouldn’t share with family or friends. I will usually buy some outsider bottles that I want to see my wife’s or friend’s reactions. Usually this includes any Riesling, Gamay, and Cab Franc. I’ll throw in one of the mentioned wines along with the crowd pleasing Cabs and Pinots.
