Wine Spectator Forums

I have actually no idea what prompted me to go over there for the first time in several years, but they just announced yesterday that they are closing their forums pages effective 12/31/24

Surprised? Nope - not a lot of action in there at all - probably don’t want to spend any time ‘overseeing’ something that is not really active

My first wine forum was there- learned a bit and enjoyed some nice connections- meet-ups including a great event at Delille with a bunch of up and coming wine makers and at least a few future berserker forumites. Not being a real names board I admit to losing track of a bunch of those folks behind their old monikers tho.

I posted there several years ago as Blue Oval. I actually attended a Holiday dinner a few weeks ago with Vino Me, BillH, and JCubed (and other CWM members) in attendance…

The one alias I remember from Seattle was Pesto. I think he went into some kind of retail wine operation.

I’ll have to swing in there and visit it one last time. I haven’t checked it out for many years but I started there before migrating to ebob which was too intimidating at first for a newb.
Anybody know/remember Powell Y, I wonder where he went?
He was in the biz and helped us with some early Napa travel plans.

I recall the days when Russell Bevan use to hold court over the latest Napa Valley Cabernet vintage.

Powell is still around, he’s working for Spectrum. He was in Taiwan for a number of years, but I’m pretty sure he’s back in California now (SoCal I think), while still spending a significant amount of time abroad.

I was one of the few who always used my real name over there, was a lot of fun back in the day, and we sure had some epic meetups.

edit to add: Powell is setting up a magnum party somewhere in Napa for his 50th, it is going to be Nov. 2025.

Thanks Eric, glad to hear he is well and still celebrating wine!

I just tried to log-in there but couldn’t of course. My handle there was ekoostik, I found one post I did in 04 but clicking on my name does nothing. I did see a bunch of avatar names that were so familiar, but no idea who these people were.

It’s really a testament into why forums need to be real name policy I think.

I know we all have complained about navigating this site ect ect but I couldn’t even find a search bar there lol

It’s a bygone era probably best to move on and reinvent if they choose?

There was another spin-off called Wino-Depot which I and some others joined first. I can’t remember why or who started it though?

Obviously was slayed by the Berserker Beast as well lol

Powell helped me set up a Napa trip several years ago. I would love to attend his 50th if we are available!

I was very much active there (under my own name, which was rare) and met some of my best friends in the world there. We had some epic offlines. I haven’t been there for years but I’m sad to see it go.

I can certainly post here when details become available.

Sounds good, Eric! I will FB message him as well…that would be one heck of an off-line celebration!

Ekoostik!

Long time no see!

Winodepot was started by R2-D2 (Rick DeLucio) and myself, ran it for a few years then closed it down when we both got busy, particularly Rick as he did most of the backend work, didn’t necessarily have anything to do with winebeserker.

I actually just met up with R2-D2 last month at a Napa Vintner’s Association tasting in La Jolla, he has relocated from Chicago to Temecula.

p.s. are you on FB? If so add me and I’ll add you to the 2025 November magnum party chat group.

I actually just talked to GA last week, haven’t seen him in ages but he’s still around.
