I’ll be staying in the Flatiron district for a few days then immediately headed to a birthday celebration for my SIL. Not checking bags, so will be looking to pick up something in the neighborhood. Any recommendations?
I’ve not been to the store, but have purchased online and wines were delivered to me in great condition and on time:
Dr. Vino Wine Store Map of NYC
Flatiron, Moore Bros, and Bottlerocket are all in the immediate area. Other options a little further afield include Burgundy Wine Co. and Union Square. Never been to Italian Wine Merchants, just east of Union Square.
RT
The Eataly wine shop is right there . . . damn, just missed it.
Between Flatiron and Moore Bros, you should be able find plenty to drink.
Same here.
+2 on Flatiron Wines. And because they’re a relatively new store, unlike board darling Chambers St, some very cool things actually make it out on the general mailing list.
Flatiron Wines is a great shop with both new and older wines. not all of the older stuff is on the website or on display Ask for Dan or Rosemary.
Flatiron is my favorite store in NYC; 95% of Chambers with 5% of the pretense.
Eataly’s wine shop is pretty solid, for Italian stuff of course…
Thanks everyone, that’s plenty of options. Gotta love NYC.
Just another plug for flatiron wines. It’s a great shop.
+5 (I think that’s what we’re up to?) on Flatiron. For the wine-geek type, they have easily the best selection of <$50 (or <$20, or whatever your budget is) in Manhattan.
Flatiron Wines was amazing. There were a pair of French guys in the back pouring Romorantin from vines over 100 years old that managed to escape phylloxera, as well as the same exact varietal/vineyard/vintage/vinification but grafted to new vines about 7 years ago. Now I see why people geek out about this place. I will be back next time in NYC.
Here’s the haul. The zin is going to go with a Shake Shack burger later. The two pinots headed to the birthday celebration. I haven’t had either of the pinots before, so hoping for the best.
I have good friends at both, and whoa, they are friends with each other.
You just suck as a person.
And you have no idea of the history of the wine business and what Chambers has meant to it.
Same folks as Uva. I’ve bought at both.
All in all, the success of Chambers St. has been a good thing for the producers that it has championed.
There is also a small shop in the southeast that often has things Chambers has run out of, as you well know.
The Guillemot is very nice, but I would give it air.
Josh Cohen who is one of guys who owns Flatiron (and a shop in brooklyn) is a great dude. They have a wonderful selection. Im glad to see so many positive endorsements/experiences from folks here.
I’ll pile on with +infinity for Flatiron and Uva.
And, re another upthread comment, POV <> pretense.
I’ve been a customer at Italian Wine Merchants for years, and I highly recommend it. In addition to wine from Italy, they have some nice Burgundy. The owner resides in Italy and seems to direct the operation from there. The website lists wines on offer. Storage conditions within the shop are very good. I’ve never purchased a damaged or defective bottle there. Note that they have structured tastings (for a fee) on Saturdays.
