wine shops in Minneapolis

In Minneapolis for a few days. Any recommendations on wine shops with good inventory and price? Thanks.

Surdyks is the best choice and there is a sale running for a couple more weeks

Is Haskell’s still there? Worked there one Christmas in the late 70’s as a stocker. Seemed pretty upscale to me at the time.

Yes, they there the biggest player here but prices tend to be high. Staff is knowledgeable and some interesting stuff. They have a long run sale also but mostly good for sub $20 stuff.

Where abouts are you going to be? Downtown I would recommend Surdyks, just a short walk across the river, Sorella (pretty good inventory of a lot of stuff) and North Loop Wine and Spirits (very good Pinot selection). Haskells in Mpls has a bunch of older stuff that is often overpriced but they have some interesting things hanging around. Just stopped yesterday and saw some Macphail Pinot which I have only seen a couple other places.

Location will dictate a lot. In addition to those mentioned above, if west of 494 loop, check out Liquor Barn in Long Lake. Lots of trophies and temp / humidity control.

Thanks for the info. I’ll be out and about tomorrow and probably check some of these out. It may be so hot that champagne or beer are in order!

Rick as mentioned Surdyk’s would be your best bet. Decent in store tastings on Thursday during their sale. They have some nice Champagnes on sale so you can’t go wrong.

In St. Paul… Solo Vino for an eclectic selection and many roses, Thomas Liquors for The same (minus rose, but with RM Champagne), and Sunfish Wine and Spirits.

Some places in Minneapolis where you’ll find some gems are Zipp’s and South Lyndale.

If California is your thing, Hennepin-Lake Liquors in Minneapolis.

One thing about the Twin Cities is that there is no single wine shop mecca. We all sort of shop all around town.

Chuck at Solo Vino is one of the best retail shop owners I know. If you go, you should ask him what he has stashed away in the basement. North Loop is solid and France 44 in Edina is a nice spot too.

Was just in Minneapolis for the long weekend and dropped buy the Wine Shop in Minnetonka. Excellent selection of European and American wines with lots of geeky selections (Orange Wine, Valtellina, Clos Saron etc.). Prices probably 20-25% above low national prices, but OK if you’re shopping for bottles in the $30-50 territory. Thought i’d recommend it for folks searching for a place in the western suburbs.

Solo Vino and Sunfish are two of my favorites. I like that Solo Vino has Austrian wines.

South Lyndale Liquors is another great store - nice breadth of selection and decent prices -

Hennepin Lake has a terrific selection of upper crust California wines -

Zipp’s is a great store as well, but more for the under $20 everyday drinkers crowd -

Surdyks is still the class of Minneapolis, great German selection -

If he ends up that far west of 494 he’s got bigger problems than where to find wine…

I love the Liquor Barn! Found it one day when I stopped in for some ice fishing PBR

Surdyks, South Lyndale and Thomas for me. Haskells Mtka if Lonny is working.

Also, if you want a really good selection of Italian wines, I Nonni, has a retail section that is nice. It looks like an event room though with no salesperson.

It is just across interstate from Sunfish. I picked up tonight a 2004 Podere Rocche dei Manzoni Barolo Vigna Cappella di Santo Stefano.

Piling on for South Lyndale.

While you will find wines there that no one else has, you will also pay prices that no one else does.
