Will be in NYC for a few days next week and would appreciate reco’s for good wine shops in the Midtown area. Really looking to purchase wines to consume during the week so if it has a nice selection of RTD wines better! Pardon me if covered before but could not find through search. Thanks.
Crush at 57th and 2nd Ave (?), I’m pretty sure, is the obvious go-to in that area. (Moore Bros, cheaper, but finally not as wideranging or exciting is close to the Union Sq area IIRC.) Others may know more insider-y ones; I’m from NYC and get back there regularly, but it’s a long time now since I actually lived there.
Others to consider are Sherry-Lehman (Park Ave. and 59th St.) and Morrell & Co. (on the south side of the plaza at Rockefeller Center). They have less interesting selections than Chambers St. or Crush or Flatiron, and they’re expensive. But they’re still pretty good. Plus there’s Garnet on Lexington at 68th, a few blocks north of the core of Midtown.
East Side or West Side? West side you have 67 Wines, which is on Columbus between 67 and 68 just north of Lincoln Center. I don’t know anyplace south of there all the way to south of Times Square. There are lots of interesting place on the East Side that are not destination wine shops but that have occasional gems. I once bought a 1922 Madeira at Beekmans Liquors, which is on Lexington between 47 and 48. Ambassador on Second between 53 and 54 is another place which is not like the destination shops but has occasional gems. One day we had too many corked bottles at Peking Duck House and we just ran up the block to Ambassador and got a few bottles there. My office on Third between 51 and 52 used to have a good selection, but the electrostatic wine refrigerator blew a few weeks ago and all the stuff migrated to the White Plains location.
Previous posts pretty much covered the best spots. Two things though: A) who in their right mind considers Chambers to be “midtown”??? & B) why just midtown? You’re depriving yourself of a couple of gems such as Chambers, PJs, K&D Wines, etc.
Jorge, I’ll be traveling with wife and son and figured that my wine time better be walking distance from hotel. This will be our first family vacation since we opened our business six years ago so it really has to be about them with a little wine time sneaked in. They put up with my 90 hour weeks.
Garnet on 68th and Lex was a great ‘stumble upon’ when in NYC last week. Chris was a pleasure to chat with. So sad that I couldn’t stretch the luggage allowance further.
Chambers were good too, but most stock was hidden away so check their website first.
Also, Frankly Wines a couple of blocks down W. Broadway from Chambers. Tiny store, extremely well chosen selection, they are the mouse to Chambers’ elephant.
The post suggesting Chambers came after post #5 asking about Tribeca.
If OP is concerned about time, a lot depends on where in midtown hotel is. If in the hotel cluster at and above Times Sq, probably as quick to jump on 1/2 line to Chambers or R to Flatiron as to get across to Crush, etc. Midtown west is pretty much wine desert.
I see that now Dale. My apologies then. Also, you have a point. It can take same amount of time or even less to go north to south in the subway than east to west with pretty much any transportation option.
If you’re concerned about time, nearly all of the good Manhattan shops can probably deliver to your hotel. Delivery is generally free if you hit a minimum spend, it can vary by store, but usually it’s in the ~$150 range.
I haven’t been in K&D for a while, but the store used to get very warm in the summer. I’d be uncomfortable buying bottles that looked like they’d been there a while.
K&D just moved 2 blocks south and is now going to store the bulk of their bottles offsite. I think they’re aware of the storage issue. None of which mitigates their horrific overpricing.
In Carnegie Hill, best stores are Mister Wright, K&D, and for inexpensive wines the remarkably excellent and tiny Vynl Wines.
Further down on the UES are Millesima and Sotheby’s, in addition to Garnet.
Determine a radius you are willing to walk to and from your Hotel and grid it off methodically.
If you are on the eastside go to the 60s/70s on the # 6 train to 77th and work that area. Same if you are on the west. For the 60s/70s take the #1 train to w66th. Nancy’s Wine is a few blocks further from 67th St Wines on Colombus Ave.
No carrying anything, certainly all can be delivered.
If you don’t find what you want, work the best Manhattan wine shop websites. Or do that first.
