Inspired by Zylderberg’s thread and my bare sherry cupboard, where in Mass does a guy go for sherry?
My usual shops don’t have much at all, and I’m drinking sherry mostly at restaurants (usually Taberna de Haro or Toro). I’m hoping for a shop in Boston, but willing to drive to any potential sherry hotspots!
(Hope this is the right forum for this request.)
Don’t know if this will help, but the Rare Wine Co in Sonoma is now the importer for Valdespino.
Thanks, Eric, but unless I’m mistaken (and I’d sure like to be), the Rare Wine Co would need a retail presence in Mass for me to buy directly from them. Their FAQ states “all goods are sold in California and title passes to the Buyer in California.”
Generally speaking, the shops in and around Boston are good, though I miss out on some of the great internet deals. Good except for sherry, though I hope I’m mistaken about that, too!
Richard,
You could try Table & Vine in West Springfield. I’m not sure what they carry for sherry but they have a large, broad selection. It might be a bit of a drive for you but its only a few minutes off I-90.
At the risk of being named a shill, we carry a wide array of sherries at Marty’s.
Sherry-Lehmann has a decent selection, and their website says they ship to Massachusetts. http://www.sherry-lehmann.com/wine-and-spirits-shipping-terms
Thanks all! ![cheers [cheers.gif]](/uploads/db3686/original/2X/0/0ff9bfcdb0964982cd3240b6159868fbdf215b1a.gif)
Peter, I’ll definitely make it out to see you guys. I’ve been meaning to do so for quite awhile, and Newton is just a skip away.
I also received a PM from a WBer who’s at another fine local shop (Gordon’s, where I buy the bulk of my Burgundys, a large chunk of Piemontes, and various everything else), so it looks like I’m even discovering sherry connections I didn’t know I already had!
And that’s very nteresting about Sherry-Lehmann - they must have some sort of retail/warehousing operation here - always great to have a new source!
I didn’t look for it when I was there a couple of weeks ago, but I would be surprised if the Wine Bottega couldn’t help you.
That IS interesting about Sherry-Lehmann considering the illegality of shipping into MA. Whatcha gonna do, right?
Peter, I’m unlikely to purchase from S-L unless they deliver same day by private car (like Gordon’s).
There’s a certain Western Mass shop that used to stock a decent selection of Italian wines that I stopped purchasing from only because the 3rd party shipping caused me too much anxiety. We’re lucky to have good shops in the Boston area (thanks to folks like you), and despite my occasional grousing I prefer to keep my purchases local.
(And, yes, I’m also one of those guys who returns every corked bottle… and my threshold is very low!)
And every corked bottle should be accepted back by your retailer with a smile. I’m not in the store on Thursday, but will be Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday.
And we deliver, of course.
Thanks, Peter!
We’re driving down to NYC for the weekend, but will definitely be paying you a visit soon. ![cheers [cheers.gif]](/uploads/db3686/original/2X/0/0ff9bfcdb0964982cd3240b6159868fbdf215b1a.gif)
Brian, I received an email via Todd from you asking about that Western Mass shop, and I’m not sure my response got back to you. That place was the Spirit Shoppe in South Egremont. I recall purchasing wines from some good producers over the years (Vietti, Capanna, Borgogno, Heidler), but much of the inventory was more internationally styled wines. My last purchase was a pretty great haul of 04 and 07 Antoniolo Gattinaras.
But I took a quick look at the website just now, and can only conclude that they’re going out of business given the measly selection of uninteresting wines. Not sure what’s happening there, but perhaps the owner could fill us in? I believe he’s a member here and has a La Spinetta looking rhino avatar, but I could be way off on that!

A vote of confidence for Marty’s - my favorite shop when I lived in Boston. I also ended up going to NYC quite a bit and loading up my suitcase from places like Crush, Astor and Acker retail.
