Wine list help

My daughter and SIL are headed here for a birthday dinner and she was asking for red suggestions in the $150 range. They do like cabs (not fruit bombs), Tempranillo, Italians so pretty flexible. I am struggling with the prices and am less familiar with those in their price target. I’m turning to WB for help…so help!

Many thanks.

Yeah, a link would help DOH!

That is one seriously tough list…except for the DRC? They must really want you to drink them all.

Considering all the wines on that list around 150 could fit on one page - maybe - there’s not a whole lot of room.

Corkage?

Restaurant prices. I often try to look for value but most of the list looks to be at least 3x retail….

If I was dining there with $150 wine budget, and was going to order a red meat dish, I would go with the Vina Cobos ‘Bramare’ Malbec. Had one a few years ago at a steakhouse in Houston and enjoyed it.

I would splurge and spend $10 more for the 2012 Cerbaiona, Rosso di Toscana @ $160. This is a special wine, and absolutely worth that, I would be happy to find that bottle, at that price…on any wine list.

These are nosebleed prices.

Strictly within budget, I think you’d be looking at the following four wines:

$110
2018 Mount Veeder
84 tasting notes, 90.8 points
Community Tasting Notes - 2018 Mount Veeder Winery Cabernet Sauvignon - CellarTracker
259 ratings, 4.1 points
2018 Mount Veeder Winery Cabernet Sauvignon | Vivino California

$115
2018 Whitehall Lane
9 tasting notes, 90.3 points
Community Tasting Notes - 2018 Whitehall Lane Cabernet Sauvignon - CellarTracker
29 ratings, 4.1 points
2018 Whitehall Lane Cabernet Sauvignon | Vivino California

$135
2016 Long Meadow Ranch
10 tasting notes, 90.4 points
Community Tasting Notes - 2016 Long Meadow Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon - CellarTracker
13 ratings, 4.2 points
2018 Long Meadow Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon | Vivino California

$150
2014 d’Arenberg The Dead Arm
21 tasting notes, 91 points
Community Tasting Notes - 2014 d'Arenberg Shiraz The Dead Arm - CellarTracker
884 ratings, 4.1 points
2014 d'Arenberg The Dead Arm Shiraz | Vivino North Carolina

If I were trying to drink American on a “tight” budget, then I’d order the following:

$110
1995 Kalin Cuvee W Chardonnay
46 tasting notes, 91.2 points
Community Tasting Notes - 1995 Kalin Cellars Chardonnay Cuvée W - CellarTracker
127 ratings, 4.3 points
1995 Kalin Cellars Cuvée W Chardonnay | Vivino California

$295
2018 L’Aventure, ‘Estate Cuvee’
Syrah
7 tasting notes, 91 points
Community Tasting Notes - 2018 L'Aventure Estate Cuvée - CellarTracker
2055 ratings, 4.4 points
L'Aventure Estate Cuvée | Vivino North Carolina

And if I were trying to drink French on a “tight” budget, then I’d order the following:

$195
2008 Louis Latour, Meursault-Poruzots 1er Cru
2 tasting notes, 90 points
https://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=914483
18 ratings, 4.2 points
2008 Louis Latour Meursault-Poruzots Premier Cru | Vivino California

$280
1999 Bouchard “Beaune Clos de la Mousse” 1er Cru
14 tasting notes 88.7 points
Community Tasting Notes - 1999 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune 1er Cru Clos de la Mousse - CellarTracker
33 ratings, 4.1 points
1999 Bouchard Père & Fils Beaune 1er Cru 'Clos de la Mousse' (Monopole) | Vivino California

Those prices are a bit rough, I’d be drinking cocktails. If I really had a hankering for wine and I wanted to fill the budget I’d go with the Numanthia. If I were willing to stretch the budget a bit I’d probably order the CVNE. Oddly enough, the Duckhorn Paraduxx doesn’t look that overpriced and might work for them.

Not to OP but I agree with the point about the pricing being rough.

Looks like expense account pricing.

I second Eric’s Numanthia recommendation from the Spanish section, that’s a neat wine to drink.
For US cabs I’d look at:
‘18 Mt Veeder, powerful
‘16 Heitz- nice, not a fruit bomb
‘18 Frank Family, plush, crowd pleaser

I have never had this wine and actually didn’t know about it until now. But if it were me, I’d be looking at the 2017 the Hilt Pinot from SRH. I love west end Pinots which this is and the winemaking should be strong with Matt Dees. While young, at least it has a few years on it. Reviews seem solid.

You didn’t ask for white but there is a lot worse on the list than the Trafethen Chardonnay at $60.

I really appreciate the help, this is indeed a rough looking list. I shall pass along the guidance!

What a truly horrible wine list!!! My first piece of advice would be to find a new restaurant.

Tempier at $165 seems like the best bet, but I don’t know the 2017 vintage in Bandol.

The 2017 vintage in Bandol is… too close to 2022! [bow.gif]

Strange that the Opus 2017 is basically at retail price the way the rest of the wine list is.

Man, tough scene if you’re looking for an American cab in the $150 range. I’d prob go with the Whitehall Lane for $115., or the Arrowood Sonoma for $80 and you still have room for a glass of white/sparkling beforehand.

If they’re open to non-cabs, Ridge Geyserville would be my choice. Grossly overpriced at $125…but always a great wine.

Good luck!

Sorry, are you saying that all the wines (along with Opus) are retail prices?

I like Nathan’s suggestion, I’d get the Kalin chard and order seafood. Or you can buy them the '17 DRC Corton for a birthday present. There must be a better place in Boston for steak and red wine.

I stayed at that Hotel a couple of years ago, nice place, good steaks and breakfast. I had dinner at the bar, drank beer because the list was so expensive then and even more so now. 5x retail for Collection 242? Ironically, the DRC is well-priced. I would go with one of the suggestions listed above.
