I’ll be traveling to Paris as well as Lyon in May of this year. Do you all have any recommendations for wine in Lyon or some areas outside of the city? If there are any other posts about this please link them, thank you!
Hey Tommy! I’m currently in Lyon right now and it’s a fantastic city! It’s much smaller than Paris and the parts that are cool to explore are even smaller. With that said, Lyon is the gastronomic capital of France and due to its location (near Burgundy, Rhône, Savoie, Provence, and Jura), it’s a great place to drink wine.
Wine bars:
La Cave Café Terroir
Le vin de vivant
Les Halles- Tons of small restaurants, wine bars, and specialty shops. It’s a lot of fun on the weekends. Bounce around and soak up the joyous vibes.
Wine shops:
Antic Wine
Fine dining is accessible here (less than $100 for a tasting menu) and a lot of them will have a great wine list.
Thank you, Duyen! This is an awesome list full of great recommendations. I think I’m more excited about Lyon than Paris now Any must try restaurants you’d suggest?
Thanks again!
Thanks for the recommendations. We will be in Lyon at the end of April prior to a chartered barge trip on the Burgundy canal. We love Lyon.
I second Antic Wine - fun shop and owner. We were in Lyon years and years ago specifically to dine at Paul Bocouse (which was amazing) and had some extra days to wander.
When we were in Antic Wines, we happened to meet winemaker Yves Gangloff and bought some of his wines ( Condrieu and the La Barbarine). The Condrieu was pretty amazing and we still have one bottle of the La Barbarine that we should probably get to soon. Gangloff has no website, so can’t link to it.
One word of caution - if you see the dish called ‘andouillette’ - do not make the mistake I made thinking this must be where ‘andouille’ came from. They are two very different things to say the least. If you’re an adventurous eater, just know it’s made from the pig colon - I recall I wasn’t the only person having it, so is popular. I got some from a street vendor in a market. It smelled amazing amidst the other sausages. I bit into it and the taste was quite good, and then I started to feel the parts with my tongue I didn’t expect to be there, and the chew was not what I expected… I wish I could overcome my midwestern USA textural and chewy-offal aversions, but that was not the time for me.
Hmmm…maybe it was the sauce on mine that smelt like feces - I can still smell it to this day!
The flavors certainly “developed” the more I chewed
I’ll also be in Lyon and Burgundy in May - perhaps we’ll cross paths @Tommy_L
Just an hour outside of Lyon is the Chartreuse distillery in Voiron. It’s worth a visit if you like spirits. https://www.chartreuse.fr/en/home/
I am following this thread with interest . . .
I’ll be in Lyon 5/3 - 5/5
Following this with interest as well
There’s also Bernachon chocolate as a temptation in Lyon, and if you go down to Tain Hermitage Valrhona.
We have purchased from Maison Paloma Chocolaterie. Probably buy again when we are in Lyon at the end of April. Love their chocolate.
Palomas is wonderful.
Vico Pizzza for pizza . . .
Antoinette for pain noix noisettes raisins and pain chocolat.
Adonys for a great falafel.
I will have to work Vicco into the schedule. Thank you
Anyone have any restaurant recommendations for Lyon? I know it’s the home of the “Bouchon” and culinary capital. Also, thank you everyone for your recommendations thus far! Looking forward to May!
Between Le Fooding and Michelin, there is a good cross section of options.
If you narrow down a list, I am happy to give you advice if I have eaten there or heard feedback.
This is our list. They run from upscale to burgers. Stars are not a requirement. Our only requirement was that they be within easy walking distance of where we are staying in Vieux Lyon.
La Monstrueuse
Court Bouillon
La Sommelier
l’Alchimiste
Was in Lyon last October. Check out Cinq Mains:
One of the chefs, Gregory Cuilleron, won the Ouefs en Meurette Championship in 2021 at Clos de Vougeot.
Small, informal, very fun. Solid cooking.
Ask about Allemand.
