Wine fridge power outage question - Hurricane Matthew related

I’m waiting patiently for Hurricane Matthew to get his happy ass through South Florida. I don’t have a generator and have too much wine to move to a place that does. So my question is, say I’m out of power for three days, will the wine in my wine fridge be ok? Should the temp and seal keep everything cool enough for a few days as long as we do not open the door?

Thanks.

It will be fine for a few days as long as the fridge doesn’t get knocked over.

Start drinking now.

Depends of a few things. Ambient temperature is a major one. If your outside/room temps are in the mid to high seventies I would imagine a slow creep up on the interior. I would have the generator ready if I had one. Good luck to you and yours.

May already be too late for this. Get as many gallon water jugs as you can and freeze them. You can then use these to keep the wine cellar cooler if you lose power. Hold off using them as long as possible.

I had a wine unit failure a few years ago(I am in CA) and it took 4 days to get the replacement AC. During that time I used block ice in buckets and the temp never got higher than 64 with an ambient temp of 78+. Thermal mass is your friend. Full it with cold soda and water bottles to raise the thermal mass and you should be ok.

Good luck

Thanks everyone. It’s stocked pretty good so the mass should help. We have time to freeze some water bottles so we may do that.

Agree with above, get as much cold water or ice as you can and pack that fridge!

Maybe even grab a dry ice block as the store and set it up top, but not in contact with the wine.

Power goes out, try to cover the fridge from the outside with layers and layers of blankets.

Wishing you the best.

I froze water in plastic bottles the size of wine bottles, then stuck those in empty slots in racking in the wine fridge. Keep the fridge closed until power comes back (well, unless you run out of wine first). Good luck.

Yes, best of luck David.

Brilliant. [cheers.gif]

I’m not seeing the key bit of information here: what will the ambient temperature be? If it will not be terribly warm, you should be fine for days, if not weeks.

Fingers crossed for you and your family (and, lastly, your wine)

Lower the temperature control now.

I wouldn’t worry. Take out the wine you intend to drink over the next few days now, and then keep the thing shut. It’ll be fine.

You may want to tie or strap the door shut. Regardless, good luck and hope you stay safe.

I’m doing this too, plus I turned the unit down as low as it goes. I took out my valuable wines and moved them offsite to a more secure location.

Most importantly - don’t think about the environmental exposure that your wine faced before it arrived in your cellar.

Good luck

Thanks everyone. Fingers crossed that the latest track puts us in position to not lose power. Freezing some things now to keep temps appropriate.

Ambient temp in the house now is about 71 degrees. Without power no clue, especially with the storm shutters up.

Alright alright alright! No power loss overnight and no damage in our area.

Thanks for the positive vibes!
