Wine Cellar Monitoring

Would like to hear suggestions on a wine cellar temperature/humidity monitoring tool. WiFi capability. Not looking for a service just a tool to keep an eye on things. Push alerts would be nice. Display in cellar would be nice but not a must have.

I use this which I can read from my phone. Seems to work but can’t comment on just how accurate it is…

I know there was a long thread about this before but I couldn’t find it with the search here. Anyway, I use two different things. I have a Wirelesstag in the cellar, and I also have a sensor from my Ambient Weather station down there. Both provide easy ways to check on mobile and computer, look at charts, etc. Neither has a local readout but I do have a non-wifi simple thermometer sitting down there too if I just want to glance at conditions.

I have been using Wireless Tags for a while, and am mostly happy. Their functionality is perfect for what you want for a cellar - they track temperature, humidity, you can use a liquid probe, have motion and door sensors, etc. It uploads data to a cloud account so it’s available to view via web or phone, and the phone app gives push notifications for deviations from expected (temp above/below range, humidity above/below, motion, etc.).

Where I’ve been disappointed is the product quality is pretty mixed. The original wine cellar sensors are great, but I’ve had trouble with some others as I’ve added to my system. One water sensor died pretty quickly (8 months) and you can’t replace the battery. Another one stopped responding, though was able to get it going again. Support can be pretty slow - days sometimes - though is generally pretty helpful once it comes. They do tend to chew through batteries (CR2032 for most sensors) - when I’ve contacted support I’m told my settings are good for preserving battery life, but I get months, not years. No other ongoing costs though - once you buy the unit the monitoring/push etc. remains free.

As compared to most other alternatives, it’s pretty robust with more functionality and flexibility. But I caution that it can be a bit of a ā€œroll your ownā€.

It does not have a display module - you might be able to rig one up with Raspberry Pi. Or just buy a separate product for that.

Sensor push is amazing.

A second vote here for Sensor Push HT1 + its accessory Wifi gateway. Plots your temperature and humidity history on a graph, which is really nice feature.

Battery life of sensor is a concern. I do have AC power outlet in cellar.

I’m not sure if you have a different type of ā€œwater sensor,ā€ but I just replaced a battery on my water leak sensor. It wasn’t easy to pry open, but it certainly works still. I got about 9-10 months out of the first battery.

The sensor push last awhile. I haven’t changed the batteries yet and have had them more than a year so far.

This is what I use. Works well and puts temp/humidity into a graph.

I’ve been using Aqara for several years now and love it. Beacons back to a Wi-Fi hub. Single unit measures temp and humidity.

I’ve got them all over my house. Bottom and top of my large wine fridge, Small fridge and wine cellar.

They’re also fully integrated with Homekit and Alexa.

I use these: Amazon.com

Devices connect to Wi-Fi without a hub and are individually labeled. I also get SMS and email alerts if temp or humidity goes outside my ā€œdesiredā€ range. I’ve set acceptable range as 50F to 62F and 55% to 80% RH (I live in FL). It plots both on a graph and you can adjust range to 24h, week, month, 3 months, or custom range. It also collects and saves readings in case Wi-Fi goes out and will add them to historical data when Wi-Fi comes back on.

I use a much older version of this… https://www.amazon.com/Newentor-Thermometer-Wireless-Temperature-Hygrometer/dp/B092M3ZBWG/ref=sr_1_7?crid=V63TT3Y2GOLT&keywords=remote+weather+station&qid=1660942316&s=industrial&sprefix=remote+weather+station%2Cindustrial%2C225&sr=1-7

Basically, a simple and inexpensive remote weather station that tells you temp and humidity. 25 bucks or less.

Yeah, I had the older version with a stick on it - can’t replace that battery. Newer version is replaceable, which I did, but it didn’t fix the problem. Ended up after a few back and forths ā€œshortingā€ it (i.e., dip in water) to reset it.

wireless tag is still the most powerful and customizable. they now have a usb powered sensor so batteries not an issue. i initially used for wine but now have the sensors all over my house for various other purposes. works with other connected services etc. you can set various alerts for temp and humidity, etc. link to store below.

I use wireless tags for the cellar, garage doors, and pedestrian garage door. They are great when they work, but occasionally they go ā€˜out of range’ for a bit. I have tried resetting them to no avail. And then suddenly they will work again.

FWIW I believe I currently have 8 of them (a mix of the old CR2032 style, and the newer USB style) and I don’t recall ever seeing them report ā€œout of range.ā€ I wonder if it has something to do with the placement of your hub, or interference or something like that?

I thought that at first, but it happens after I replace a battery. I have even sat at the hub, replaced the battery, and it still does it. But then a month later it might suddenly be in range again and have not moved from its position.

Been really enjoying SensorPush. Just had to change the battery in one of mine. Pulled up when I got it: June 2020. A little over 2 years seems pretty good to me

i noticed that wireless tag has added app-type experience within their platform, one of which is for wine cellars. basically allows you to easily set up immediate notifications across multiple channels (email, text, push notifications) for various relevant events such as humidity and temperature out-of-range results. very handy update.
