Wine Cellar Innovations, have you used them?

I think we should all pitch in to fund the $500 so we can see how Brian’s project turns out faster.

Agree (again). They’re basically asking you to pay $500 so someone else can wait longer . . . until they ask them to pay $500 so a third person can wait longer, and so on.

Selling expedited handling at the outset is okay; not so much after the promised date has passed.

Ha! Same! I honestly don’t know if there was a question/poll when I first responded!

Today:

“Greetings Brian,

I was checking and the lead time for this size of order is typically 12 weeks, that’s why the lead time is 5/12, the $500 upcharge is only to cover the overtime cost required for the factory to be able to expedite the order. If we could ship sooner without incurring in extra costs, we would definitely do it but unfortunately we can’t.

Let me know how you would like to proceed.”

Me:

“In my business the faster you work the more money you make because productivity is higher not because the customer paid extra. I’ve been doing it wrong for 45 years?

Just let me know when it ships. I’ve paid enough already.”

I had a good experience with them however it was nearly a decade ago when having my cellar built. I purchased their racking, it came as advertised, prompt, and was easy to assemble. I was content, however today is a different day and many are feeling pressures in unexpected areas. That said, I do think that just plain old candor and good communication are table stakes; no excuses if that’s faulty IMO.

This, except much longer than 2 years ago.

Bought racking in summer 2020 and was happy with experience. They shipped missing pieces promptly. That said, I just checked their site and the price has more than doubled in less than 2 years. Even with supply chain issues, that seems a bit shady to me.

I ordered the 115 bottle, oversized racks from WCI on two different occasions (once when I had passive storage and the second time when I built my utilitarian cellar). No delays, shipping surcharges or any other issues. Everything was delivered as advertised and I was completely satisfied. Given my experience, I would recommend, but must admit the practice you describe appears a little shady. Good luck!

Doing a full basement remodeling and I can say without hyperbole that lumber prices have at least doubled since 2 years ago. Across the board: plywood, studs, hardwoods, trim moulding. So I’m not surprised at the WCI price increase.

Agreed. Building materials have skyrocketed only just recently coming back down to a more reasonable level. 2x4 studs are still $8 ea where pre-pandemic they were $1.89. Redwood is still ridiculous, try building a deck these days. A 12’ 2x6 is $38.

I appreciate the feedback everyone, thank you. [berserker.gif]

I built my current house that we framed in '17 and finished in '00 (I am not a speed demon) and I would not even tried building a house at today’s material prices.

I used Wine Cellar Innovations 6 years ago for my converted closet and it turned out great. No shipping issues or upcharge. I think a couple of incorrect pieces which they immediately replaced. What I liked about them is at the time they had the tallest racks, able to get up to 8’ to maximize my storage space.

Fair points. I don’t think I realized just how much lumber prices have risen. But materials are only one component of total cost. My 130 bottle racking probably weighed no more than a few 12’ 2x6s. A good chunk of the cost is labor, which has gone up, but not in the same way as lumber. In the end, it’s what the market will bear.

My cost is all materials as I do the labor myself.

Building materials and delivery times are ridiculous. There’s a house next door that’s been partially built waiting on windows since last October. Asking for $500 to put you at the front of the line still seems like bad CS.

I did all my own labor as well, except for help from a buddy installing the french doors:

The whole project took about 6 months.

Based on lumber prices that truck should have an armed security escort!

Especially with me following him.

Sorry to say but they are the worst. I order racks from them about 4 years ago and 6 of the 9 racks I ordered were nailed together incorrectly. When I contacted them, they just wanted to know which new parts to send. They didn’t want to hear what was wrong or offer solutions but rather what could they do to just get me off the phone. The reality is they would have had to send six new racks because they couldn’t be assembled so instead of waiting many more months, I took them all apart and re nailed them together so they could finally be assembled. One rack was so messed up I did have them send me a new one. Unfortunately I don’t have anything good to say about them but hopefully you get your racks soon and they are put together properly. The good news is they did not try to charge me extra to rebuild my own racks!
